WIW 05.11 [happy mother's day]

A late happy Mother's day to you all! We spent the first half of the day at my folks' and then off to hubby's folks' for the second half. Today's outfit needed to suit lunch inside, walking around a lavender farm, and an outdoor BBQ dinner. I wasn't sure what to expect from the lavender farm, so I started with the boots and went from there. I really need to get myself more casual footwear options that can take a beating and get dirty; right now, these boots are it. Huge wardrobe hole right now.

Even though it was warm out today I knew it would get cool later, so I chose full length pants (warm + sun coverage) and a sweater with silk sleeves (warm, but not too warm). I added the belt+semituck because I felt like the BIG sweater needed some extra structure, especially since in the evening the sleeves would come down. A brown belt is an easy choice to go with the brown boots, but a brown-based leopard is a more fun choice! Accessorized with gold (earrings, purse) to go with the earthy vibe, retro sunnies to add back a little femme flair, and a swipe of cherry lip gloss. Also, my mom likes my hair when it's its curliest, so I wore it extra curly for her today ^^

Nail detail can be found here. Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome!

I love this Aida. Very casual and simple, it feels very 'earthy' and substantial, yet lightweight enough for lavender stroll (that sounds wonderful, btw). To put simply - it's very, very stylish. You are right, the choice of that belt is more fun ;-) I adore the side semo-tuck.

Love! That sweater is gorgeous! Love the metal bag!

Very nice! Perfect footwear for the occasion. That sweater looks two toned in the pic, and I love the silk sleeves - dressy and casual at the same time. And I am loving the extra curl in your hair!

Great sweater and I'm with your mom about the curls!

You look as fab as ever. Earthy with that special Aida touch of Glam. I love it.

And we are going to have a WONDERFUL warm week. I am soooooo excited. xo

Love the down to earth color scheme -- perfect for being outdoors.  Of course, the bit of glamour in your ears and on your nails is a great, feminine counterpoint.

I love the well thought out touches here.. animal print instead of plain, feminine bag, sunnies and earrings; and appropriate for the occasion too. Really lovely.

Just being nosy... do you have a small sunglasses wardrobe? Hope you don't mind me asking :)

Aida - I just love that top!!! I like the unexpected leopard belt, and the gold purse & accents. You really think of every last detail. It's warming up here too - what a nice change :)

Thanks for the lovely comments ladies!

Karie, the sweater is a bit two-toned; the knit part is a dusty cream and the sleeves are a brighter, cleaner cream.

Angie, yessss this week is going to be glorious :D:D

Diane, why yes I do have a little mini sunglasses wardrobe ^^ Nothing expensive though, as I'm just terrible to my sunnies! Three pairs aviators which all need replacement, three oversized/retro styles, two Wayfarer types. I wear them while driving and any time I'm outside (I'm a bit sensitive to light and haaaate squinting). Just like purses I use them to add a little something, whatever it is the outfit calls for.

Fab as always, Aida! Really like the metallic bag.

What do you call that type of tuck? Asymmetrical faux tuck?

I'm curious as to what type of "casual but can take a beating" footwear you had in mind?

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

AJ, yeah I call it an asymmetrical semi-tuck (it is actually tucked in, unlike a faux tuck where the hem is balanced behind the belt). To get it I take a 2-3 fingers wide section and tuck sharply, then ease the edges around it out depending on how "soft" I want the angles. For the shoes, I'm thinking some pull on sneakers would be best but I don't have much sportiness in my style so it's just been so tough getting my mind around it. I'll probably get the classic checkered Vans slip-ons, those have a big nostalgic place for me. Or maybe some canvas oxfords. Ballet flats just don't cut it for romping around outside, you know? ;)

I think the silk sleeved sweater with the semi tuck showing off your belt really make this outfit look special.

silk with serious boots! khakis with gold and filigree! so much to love here. but especially the off-centre tuck and curly hair day for Mum.

do you like tweed? I saw some tweed and leather oxfords at clarks that may fit the bill for you. they were brown flecked with a heathery bunch of pinks and greens and purples.

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

    Thanks KC and Manidipa!

Mani, I really like the sound of tweed and leather oxfords! I think those would be great for standard weekend fare, but I'm thinking even more casual. Borderline gear, something I could toss in the washer or scrub clean with Oxiclean. For going out to local farms for picking fruit/flowers/etc., after taking the dirt bikes out trail riding, that sort of thing.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a wee sunglasses wardrobe :D and I agree, I enjoy how you use them for good effect in your outfits and it got me thinking (I only have 2 pairs) I might add some more.
