WIW 08.26 [navy, emerald, and cognac]

In the spirit of giving my favorite summer items one last whirl while we have warm temps, today I pulled out a combo that I kept wanting to wear that felt too autumnal but now feels just right as we inch closer to cool weather. (The top is actually darker than photographed.) Would you believe I ironed these linen shorts not 10 minutes before snapping photos? Guess I should've used steam!

These shorts are a higher rise than I normally wear, which unfortunately makes semi-tucking never quite look right. So I usually go either fully tucked or just untucked. After reading Angie's neater partial-tuck technique (tucking the front and back and leaving the sides loose) I've been wanting to give it a try and this was the perfect outfit for it. Most of the benefits of a full tuck, with some of the slouch from a semi-tuck! I'll definitely be doing this again.

Buttoned to the top and accented in cognac (belt, shoes), gold (earrings), and orange (lipstick) to give it a more transitional feel. And worn with more open shoes (versus oxfords which was my first thought) and a white purse to keep it skewed more summer than not.

Available items collected below. Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome.

(PS: Angie, I still don't like how I feel in navy even though, objectively, the photos always look just fine -_- I don't mind it today, though. Not sure why.)

Well, I think you look great in navy.  Love the combo of it with emerald, and it all makes a great transitional outfit.

Terrific color combination. Love the cognac in this. So cute how you are all buttoned up :)

I quite like this colour combo on you  for this time of the year - bang on , actually.  I bet the navy is good here because of the green bouncing off of it. Something really works here - unexpectedly, I agree. Not that I know you that well, but I can see what you mean....

Partial tuck works perfectly here too.

Fantastic. Especially love the shorts. I keep thinking I won't use cognax shoes, but seeing them go with navy and emerald I'm wondering if they would actually rescue a lot of my unworn items. I have such a hard time matching navy to anything but black - the irony! You look great and pulled together in a nice AIda way.

I like this outfit and think navy looks good on you.  I actually don't usually like navy on me either (it has some frumpy connotations that are purely personal), but I always like it on others.

Beautiful rich colour combo! I really like this for the entry into autumn.

I love this combo on you. I find navy can be as heavy as black, on me, sometimes. So maybe the emerald has "lightened" the feel of the navy for you.

I think you look great in navy. But you seem to look great in everything. :)

You must iron like I do. I will slave over the ironing board but find that all the wrinkles somehow return by the time I'm done. Oh well!

I really like this color combination - and thank you for demonstarting a new semi-tuck technique: I will definitely try it too.
What is that comment about navy: I think it looks great on you but it you don't feel it then you don't feel it I guess...

Whatever you call this tuck, it is perfect. I especially like the cognac belt with this too. Gorgeous hair as usual too!

Well, I think you do look nice in navy. I love the top, specially all buttoned up, a nice summer-fall transitional look well executed. The shorts are fab, I see no issues with the rise at all. Your purse makes me think of some sea creature because of the pointy studs :)

I really like this colour combo, Aida. The partial tuck with sides undone is a brilliant idea here. I like how you've kept it all summery with the shoes and bag. It's almost fall but still hot here! Enjoy the last days of warmth. Btw you look great in navy!

Copy copy copy! That's what my head said when I saw this outfit :D. I think navy looks lovely on you. What is your issue with navy? I am intrigued :)

These strong colours really suit you--the navy really makes your skin look white (or maybe it is the lighting?). Such a great example of a transitional season outfit! Thanks Aida.

Great colors for you.  It's a lovely combination.

  • amiable replied 9 years ago

Love this one too - and I have a navy top and green shorts (That are more apple-y green than yours).  I think I should copy.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Hah. Fun to see you wear my neater partial tuck (which I wore yesterday, so high five).

It's great to see you wear baggy shorts, Aida. You wear them with the best of them. Gorgeous colours, clean lines and fashionable proportions. You look AMAZING in ink. Perhaps you are getting a little more use to it. xo

This is a great warm weather outfit for fall.  Fall colors and heat friendly materials and shapes, nice outfit!

  • Keturah replied 9 years ago

Smashing! I seriously love this so much. Emerald and navy has been one of my favorite color combos for years. You look gorgeous and wear shorts like a queen!

I'm really glad you went with a more open shoe. I think oxfords would look fine, but I like that you showed more skin, especially since you buttoned the shirt up to the collar. I just think it helps lengthen your overall look.

And the punch of cognac is heavenly!

Thank you so much ladies, I appreciate all the feedback! Glad to hear that the navy looks fine to you all. So regarding navy: I feel like it brings out too much of the yellow tones in my skin, and I prefer to bring out the peachier tones. This is why, even though I can wear many of both warm and cool colors, I tend to favor warmer shades. They make me happiest!

Una, didn't you used to have cognac boots that weren't getting worn? I think you'd totally rock cognac paired with your black and grays, it's a wonderfully moody combo. And of course, with navy and emerald :) I like cognac because it's a nice rich brown that doesn't feel earthy, unless you style it that way.

Caro, yes I too feel rather heavy (mood-wise) in navy. I think it might just be all dark colors that do this to me though. I like the idea of treating it like I treat black, that might help quite a bit actually.

Gigi, hah that sounds about right, especially with linen things of which I have quite a bit ^^

Angie, I think that perhaps I am getting more used to it. I did a quick count this morning and found that I have 5 ink/navy items (2 blouses, 2 sweaters, and a jacket) along with pants that have navy in their print, which all get worn. So clearly I don't mind wearing it it at least sometimes. I'll keep working at it! And yay for baggy shorts, they are by far my favorite summer bottom :D Next summer I really should pass on a few of my skirts that aren't getting enough wear and replace them with baggy shorts that will; separate from the weather being warmer than usual, I still wear them a lot.

Keturah, the open shoe was also a little prettier which I enjoy in a shoe :) My poor oxfords (which I do love) get taken out and then put back in favor of prettier shoes more often than they'd like.

I love, love, love the color combination you put together! And those shorts look incredible on you (:

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

We are always learning about our preferences aren't we, Aida. More baggy shorts for you next year. xo

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

    Thanks Dawn!

Angie, YES definitely always learning. I grouped up a bunch of my summer outfits (trying to get some backlogged outfits ready to post) and noticed that shorts dwarfed all other bottom wear. I definitely feel happiest in shorts and pants! With that info in hand, I'm now planning to pass on a couple summer skirts and several summer dresses.

Beautiful polished shorts outfit Aida!  Really love how you executed the partial tuck -- it's perfect.  And the green and navy is so perfectly late Summer.

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Thank you Denise! I give Angie full credit for that tuck idea, it's pretty genius ^^

Aida, I just followed Amy's link to this WIW and have to say that I LOVE that color combination.  The bright navy and emerald are gorgeous together.  The buttoned up button up adds a bit of preppy formality to the outfit.  I am checking out that watch too.  :)
