WIW 05.07 Derby day

Will post last week's outfits soon hopefully, but in the meantime I wanted to share my Kentucky Derby outfit! Worn to watch the Derby, and the Vancouver-Nashville hockey game (go Canuks!!), and of course sip on juleps. It was WAY too cold to wear this outside so we cranked up the heat, ate BBQ chicken sandwiches, and pretended that it was much warmer out :)

This is the twist front dress from Target that Angie blogged about which several other forum ladies also have. One of my finds from this past Friday; will post the others for a game of keep-or-return soon. I didn't have a lot of time to work on my hat but I think it turned out pretty well. I got this great floppy hat in Florida a couple years ago, and used silk flowers and feather bunches to decorate. Did anyone else dress up? Would love to see some Derby outfit posts!

Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome!

Oh, yay! I was hoping to see a bonnet!! My BF is from Louisville, so I have been steeped in the Derby traditions through him :) I did throw on a white hat here alone in my condo while I watched on TV. No juleps - just a glass of sauvignon blanc. :)

EDIT: and the dresss fits like a dream! I was so busy with the hat I forgot!

Thanks ladies, I always love those fun derby hats and enjoyed decorating mine ^^

The dress ended up fitting better than expected, I think I may go back and get the brown as well! I think it will flatter quite a variety of body types.

Mwahaha! I was reading your comment about going back for the brown polka dot. It comes in solids too : ) I love both the dress and hat on you. So pretty, Aida!

I'm afraid I totally missed out on the Kentucky Derby this year. I am impressed with your hat making talent Aida. The dress flatters and looks like it will be comfortable in hot weather.

Cute! The dress is really flattering. And I love the hat!

This dress looks better on you than it does on the model. You look wonderful and what a great outfit for the Derby.

That hat is bananas! Love love love the outfit and themed get-together.

I love the blue polka dot dress! It looks amazing on you!

Aida, this is SO unexpected and I SO love it on you! :D:D:D:D WOW. You look fab. Definitely go back and get the brown, too! And your hat is just too perfect. You did a brilliant job!

Admittedly, I am sad I wasn't invited for your Derby Party. I would have totally donned a frilly dress and a crazy hat. One so large and obnoxious that views for at least five would be blocked. Just kidding...maybe.....okay, for real.

    How fun and fabulous!

Your hat is so much fun. Looks like you had a great time. Cute!

    Go Canucks!

You look very pretty and I LOVE your hat! You have left me now wanting to try a mint julep...

  • chouette22 replied 12 years ago

I love your "bandwidth": from biker girl to derby lady with hat! :) I bought that same dress last Friday and returned it on Saturday. It looks fantastic on you!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Wow thanks for all the lovely comments ladies, and am glad you all enjoyed my hat as much as I did :D

Kelly - Oh how I wish this dress came in bright solids instead of black and gray, I would buy them all. The brown spotty one will come home with me next time I'm at Target though :)

Heather! Come to my derby party next year! I'm thinking I'll do one of those crazy headbands with the GIANT bows and mobs of feathers next year. And you can wear a hat as big as you like, we've got a big TV ;D

Niki Lea - Woo, our Vancouver cheering paid off (the Predator goal was pretty weak)! One step closer!

Katiepea - You should also come to my derby party, I will make extra mint juleps! (I like them on any hot day, not just derby days! I suggest asking for extra syrup and extra mint, which is how I like mine :) )

Chouette - Thank you, your bandwidth comment made me giggle ^^ And just yesterday I was in a 50's style rockabilly outfit (post coming soon)....
