WIW 04.23 [shorter over short over longish]

Today there's a strong threat of rain, though I've yet to see it, so warmth and dry footwear were the primary orders of the day. I've been wanting to try another look with my little knit hoodie and with today being much cooler it was a good chance to do so.

The initial idea was to wear a longer black blazer and slouchy black mid-calf boots, but the blazer felt too similar to the last time and, well, I still feel like playing around so today I thought I'd play with the layering lines. My sis has a couple denim jackets with sweatshirt/sweater sleeves that I love the look of, but I don't have one myself. I got this cropped faded denim vest recently, and realized I could easily emulate the look by popping it over the hoodie. I pulled all of the collars out onto each other to echo the triple layering at the hems. With all the interest going on up top I went simple with jewelry, just my watch, wedding ring, and a pair of little brass studs to pick up on the buttons.

Since I swapped the blazer with faded denim, when I tried the black boots they felt too heavy; it also felt a bit too rugged overall, for me. The cream booties keep the bottom more streamlined, are refined, structured, and add some additional textural interest. Plus they're heeled and y'all know I like my heels, though I don't think that's actually necessary for this as the layering actually adds length despite all the lines. I liked the low roll yesterday and, since these jeans are also long, I decided to do it again today (I promise I'll leave my pants at full length tomorrow!). The gold sequin clutch seemed like a fun juxtaposition, plus I love how it looks with faded denim. And lastly, I wore light pink lip gloss and a double dose of mascara to further soften/pretty the look.

So the overall look ends up a bit hectic, with a whole lot of different layers and textures (sheer silk, fine knit sweater, distressed denim, normal denim, ruched leather, sequins). But I feel like I did enough to reign things in and keep it refined, though my hair decided to go along with the hectic theme ;) Which isn't a huge problem, it matches my mood today ^^

Oooh errr I've come over all light headed - this works really well. I like how the grey hoodies works with the light denim and cream bottom half and I love the shirt. The layering works really well. I read your pits before I looked at the photos and was a bit worried that this would look bulky - but it doesn't - it looks great. Well Done - looking forward to tomorrow's post.

It is a bit hectic but I really like it. hat a creative way to use the cropped vest  AND hoodie to emulate a mixed media jacket!
and of course i so approve of white booties with white jeans! :-)

I think this is awesome.  The lack of strong contrast mitigates any busy factor to my eye.  Very fun!

I like it!  I like how nicely the layers stack and how the tonal color mix gets paler as you go down until you hit the white legs,  a nice gradient effect.

The gold sequined clutch is unexpected, and I like that you added it because it was fun for you.

Well it may be complicated but the effect is easy on the eyes. Love these colors and the white jeans on you!

Thanks ladies! I'm filing this one under "fun with fashion" :)

KC, having the final look not be bulky was pretty important to me. Choosing all lightweight pieces helps a lot.

Una and Rabbit, yes the tonality and vertical gradient definitely helps subdue the hectic layering! That's part of why I felt perfectly comfortable in this.

I think it works well; the restrained color palette and the fact that there's only one print item helps it hold together.

Great hectic look. DD has been swiping my vest to layer over her grey hoodie too. I really like all of the layers and the light bottoms really make it look spring-y!

You did a great job with the layering - from the thumbs I thought it was a mixed media jacket. I like the ladylike footwear to balance out the masculine plaid with denim combo.

Wah, it's too hot here for me to try a copy cat! I'm favoriting this 'cause you know I enjoy layering!

Keeping the layers low contrast makes this so successful! The white jeans and cream booties makes it FAB for spring. The gold clutch and stud earrings are perfect finishing touches!

Wow! Nicely done! Doesn't look hectic to me at all! The sequin clutch is a nice touch! And nice shoes too!

Gee! This is a brilliant layering, looks like a mix media denim jacket at the first sight!  Love me some quirky layers and textures and greys with the whites are so subtly, love the color flow and those heels make it all more ladylike, and polished! YLF again, Aida!!

love all the layering here.  i'm really impressed with how well this works, it looks so intentional (of course because it is), but so often this kind of layering looks, well, like the wear just throw things on. i'm taking notes so that i can try this!

You're definitely having fun with fashion! I have a faded denim vest that I sometimes feel I don't quite know how to style. I bought it last year as a layering piece to take the place of denim jacket in the summer months. You've made me realize I can even wear it now while it's still a bit cool out - thanks for the styling inspiration!

Masterful layering, Aida!  I think the restrained and low-contrast color palette keeps this from seeming hectic.  Everything is playing well in ensemble, if you know what I mean.  I imagine light layers are a go-to in your climate.

Love the lighter footwear.  That bit of refinement is a nod to the feminine and streamlined elements in your style.

I'm not a huge layering fan but there's a sleekness to this that really appeals to me. It's like those items were meant to be worn together. And I adore the unexpected sparkly clutch with the plaid and denim. Fabulous!

What brand are those white jeans Aida? Love the fit and shape of them.

Soo cool!  Makes me want to try something similar.

#3 just about launches me into orbit. I LOVE the glittery gold with the faded denim and white. I vote 100 out of 10. xo

Thanks for all the wonderful comments ladies, I really appreciate them! Glad to hear my crazy layering experiment wasn't so crazy after all ^^

Rae, I didn't even think of how the top had strong masculine elements. With that in mind, I think ruggedness wasn't the issue with the black boots but probably that it didn't have enough femininity to balance out for me.

Kkards, thin materials help a LOT when layering this much :) The blouse is sheer, the hoodie is a fine gauge knit, and the denim is lightweight.

Karie, I also got this for warm weather but hey that's many months away at this rate. Vests are great during transitional weather!

Shannon, the white jeans are the KUTs that Angie recommended last season. These, I think? Though my pair feels more like a straight leg than a skinny to me.

Angie, yessss there is something magical about the gold sequins with faded blue denim and white right?? :D
