Questions on tricky footwear for midis (and also my heeled loafers)

After reading and rereading Angie's post on footwear for midi-length skirts and dresses, I've got a good idea of which of my shoes will work with midis for me. Except a few tricky ones :) Would love to get some feedback on what you gals think of these. No styling done here, but I do wear this skirt with the waist defined as I have here. And I promise when I wear it out of the house I make sure the hem actually falls correctly (it's a bit longer in the back, but I apparently turned it to the right for these photos).

  1. Heeled ankle boots.
  2. Heeled hiking/moto boots with tread.
  3. Flat slouchy mid-calf boots.
  4. Flat skimmers.
  5. Heeled loafers (I think they're loafers?).
  6. Heeled loafers.

And an additional question regarding the loafers in #5-8. #7 (brown) is detail of #5, and #8 (black) is a detail of #6. These are both 6+ years old, and haven't been worn in a long time because I generally dislike chunkier heels. In light of the platform loafers I'm seeing (I also generally dislike platforms), I thought perhaps they were worth a look. Do they look dated or could I still wear them? I do realize they are both in dire need of conditioner and polish :) Thanks ladies!

EDIT: Swapped my newer photos of the loafers for nicer photos that I took several years ago :)

First, can I say how GORGEOUS you are in this skirt?! My faves are ALL of them except #3. Would you mind sharing where those loafers in 7 came from? I've been searching like crazy for something like this.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Thanks Sarah! The loafers in #7 are Franco Sarto from several years ago (2008 maybe?) Sorry that's not too helpful for you :\

  • Nakidra replied 12 years ago

Agree with Sarah. What a great skirt and I love it with the ankle booties. I think with #3 is that they are a little too tall, KWIM. They need to either be ankle length or knee-high, IMO. I also really like it with the flats, but I'm a flat lover at heart.

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

KILLER skirt. Oh my goodness! Another petite who rocks a midi :)

    love #1, #2, #3 and #4

#10 is great - pass on the Franco Sartos.

Hi five Nakidra - I'm a flats lover at heart too.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Thanks Nakidra and Angie! Hooray for the mid-calf boots AND flats passing :D I will set the Franco Sartos back aside, and keep the black loafers out to wear this season. Wooooo! I am now much more motivated to find another midi or two :)

(#10 became #8, for those who read this post later. Removed bad photos and kept the 2 nice ones at the end.)

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Oh Angie, quick additional question actually: The Franco Sartos, pass on them for everything or just with midis?

  • rae replied 12 years ago

I think these ALL look perfect!

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

Pass on forever! I just did the same thing with a client today with *exactly* the same pair of shoes.

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

You look AMAZING in this midi! Where is it from?! I wore a pair of shoes exactly like those FS for about 8 years starting in 1999, until my toes literally could be seen through the tip. I actually rather like your cordovan pair (if that's the color?) and think they look almost retro cool with the midi. :)

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Rae, thanks! The boots in #2 made me think of you when I put them on ^^

Angie, ok thanks! That was my suspicion as well, but I wasn't sure :) I've only worn them once in the past year or two in a way that felt not-too-frumpy, for a Sartorialist copycat outfit I didn't wear out of the house back in February. I rather liked this styling of it, but flat loafers are probably better for this vibe?

Una, this is a vintage midi that I thrifted, like, 10 years ago. If I remember correctly, it's constructed of 4 trapezoidal panels. I haven't seen anything like it recently, but I would LOVE to have duplicates of it!

  • Deborah replied 12 years ago

Aida this is a great skirt. I love the look of 1, 2 and 4. I think they all create a cool balance with the midi. I like your black heeled loafers but looking front on with the skirt they look a little bland to me. The side view of that shoe is great. But Aida it may just be my personal preference as I think there is a fine line between a loafer style shoe looking fashion forward or dowdy.

I like your Satorialist copy cut outfit!

  • sarah replied 12 years ago

LOL, Aida - guess I WAY off base about those shoes!

  • replied 12 years ago

hands down, my absolute favorite is with the flats, very cute!

  • annagybe replied 12 years ago

#1 and #2 are the best and most modern in my opinion. Mind you I have yet to jump on the midi bandwagon.

  • Elly replied 12 years ago

I love the look, especially one and the one with flats. Really good look on you. We do have similar figures and coloring! I love that turtleneck on you.

  • Danelle replied 12 years ago

I think #2 is best, the boots pick up the color of your hair. :)

  • Kyle replied 12 years ago

Number 2! Number 2! Number 2! Add a cropped leather or denim jacket--oh, my. Fur vest, anyone? Lovely silhouette, Aida.

  • Irene replied 12 years ago

It looks so cute with the ballet flats! How tall are you? I always feel that you and I have a similar shape, so I pay special attention to your outfits with the idea that they may work on me too.

  • Midwest Girl replied 12 years ago

You look great in this outfit--very flattering! My favorite look is with the heeled ankle boots. They add a glamorous yet modern edge to the outfit.

  • Queen Mum replied 12 years ago

I like 1,2 and 4, with 4 being my favorite.
I'm wondering what a more fitted slightly taller than ankle boot would look like with this.....

okay, for some reason, i'ts posting the wrong link. I"m trying to post the SE maddie and it's coming up as the SE Loni

  • Lisa replied 12 years ago

1, 4 and 8 are my favorite. I especially like #1 because the boot is not too tall. The other boots (2 and 3) are a bit tall for longer skirt style. I would pass on the loafers in #7, Franco Sarto, they are a bit chunky and dated looking. The chunky styles now are a bit softer/rounded edges.

  • biscuitsmom replied 12 years ago

I think they all look great, especially the booties! You look wonderful in skirts that length :)

  • Scarlet replied 12 years ago

1 - 4 all work proportion-wise to my eye. Glad to read in the other comments I am not off base. Not crazy about the loafers--I am having a hard time envisioning how to wear them. Maybe in part because they don't seem like your style to me.

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

This skirt is so AWESOME on you, Aida! You should be wearing this once a week at least! It looks really gorgeous on you. I think 1 and 2 knock it out of the park--just fab. The ballet flats work well too; they just aren't as eye-catching IMO as the first two booties looks.

  • Ginny replied 12 years ago

looks good, I really like #1 and love it with flats!!

  • lyn67 replied 12 years ago

1,and 2 are my fav, nr. 4 also good, (if it's that comfy? so so flat!)
-sorry but if you don't mind telling, I'll pass on nr 3.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Thanks for all the great feedback ladies, my apologies for the late response! The Franco Sarto loafers are out of my closet, and I'll be polishing up the black loafers. And now I'm all set on which footwear I can wear with this skirt, so time to start wearing it! Yay!

    Airin, I'm 5'3" (160cm), so not terribly tall :)

Kim, I don't have any boots that are sleek with that shaft height (do those moto-boots in #2 count? ^^) but it's on my list! That Kelsi Dagger pair is so awesome! At this point, with 13 pairs of boots, I should probably focus on wardrobe holes though (boo).

Scarlet, I think the black loafers could definitely work with my style; I have a bit of preppy in there, so the loafers would play nicely with that aspect. Actually, I'm thinking of picking up a flat pair in a bright color (turquoise or coral perhaps!).

  • teeandcee replied 12 years ago

Number 2 is my absolute favorite closely followed by the flats. Paired with the skirt and top it has kind of a 50's vibe to it that I love. But I love-love-love the boots with the skirt in #2 the best.

  • Marley replied 12 years ago

Aida this skirt is wonderful on you - the perfect length of midi for you - and #2 just makes my eyes light up! LOVE it! Also, really like #1 as well as the flats. Can't wait to see how you style this!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Thanks Teeandcee and Marley! So glad to hear more love for the flats with this skirt :D
