Little changes

I'm constantly amazed at how changing a little thing can make such a huge difference in the way an outfit looks, and therefore the way you feel in that outfit.

At my husband's suggestion, I tried eyeliner the way my sis does it: halfway on top, halfway on bottom; I had only tried lining the top only though the entire lid instead of half, and even then rarely wear it sticking to just mascara usually. While not quite there (I still want something a little heavier I think), this is so much closer to the edge I want my eyes to give me, and today I feel great!

(Will post photos later, but I'm wearing gray/black striped tee, brown leather jacket with studs, and black skinnies tucked into my new brown buckled boots. And big silver hoops!)

So I just wanted to say thanks, YLF, for helping me gain insight to what I want from my style, what's missing, and how to go about getting it.

It's so true! If nothing else, I always put on some eyeliner below my eye, in the outer half. It makes me look so much more awake and a tad more polished! I do what you did when I'm putting on eyeshadow... maybe I should try it even on the days when I go without eyeshadow.

The eyeliner looks so pretty on you. As Angie says, the devil is in the details.

Kate - I'd never even considered lining my lower lid, but I agree with you: it makes me look more awake, to my surprise. I'm not wearing any shadow, if that helps you visualize the look without it :)

Tanya - Thank you! I just got this purple eyeliner from my sis and I love the color and light metallic look (my other liner is charcoal). Now to master those details!

You have gorgeous skin, and the eyeliner looks soft but very pretty. I've gone my whole life without eyeliner. A few months ago at age 40 my eyes started looking bare and boring, and so I bought some eyeliner and gave it a go. What a difference! I'm too chicken to wear along my lower lashes, but it's pretty easy to use along the upper lid and really makes a nice statement. I suddenly feel grown up! :o)

You have the kind of eyes that can carry off drama and edge- go for it! It is a blast to play around and suddenly find something that represents yourself! A while back I stopped wearing mascara and shadow on a daily basis. It makes my eyes a lot less "noticeable" but it somehow made me feel better, more like I was gravitating closer toward my inner style. For me it was to stop wearing eye cosmetics that was what I needed to do to gain my insight to my style. Those subtle changes can be leaps of inner progress.

It looks really good on you! Well done to hubby for making that little suggestions!

ooooh you have just inspired me to try to wear eyeliner! I rarely ever go out without mascara but that's usually it.

Ooo, nice! Subtle but edgy. I stopped wearing eyeliner on my lower lashes; now you make me want to try again :)

  • AJ replied 13 years ago

I likey! I'm going to try this 50-50 technique. Thanks for sharing!

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Loves Moose - Thank you! That's basically where I am in regards to make up. You should give the lower lashes a go, just to try it once :)

Wilson - I'm glad you found what you needed to represent your style! I'll definitely keep working towards finding the dramatic look I'm after, definitely happy to have a place like YLF to get opinions and suggestions.

i thought i was the only one too chicken to wear liner on my lower lashline! :) hurray for company.

you look fantastic, aida. i'm definitely going to have to work up the courage and try this!

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Theresa - This liner is liquid, though I'm not great at putting it on yet. I tried both liquid and pencil and like both, different types of looks. I'm hoping to experiment more with both.

Cciele - Exactly what I was going for :D

AJ - My pleasure! I like that it's edgy but subtle, as Cciele put it. Looking forward to seeing your take on it, hope it works for you!

Hanna - Happy to inspire everyone to try this! Sometimes these things we're afraid to try end up working wonderfully (like this!).

Aida- You have such beautiful, soft brown eyes. A lovely shape as well. I love what you have done with the 50/50 technique. Can I recommend something? Try a soft color eye pencil with a smudger, lightly line the upper and lower lid, following closely to your lash line, not to the inner corners of your eyes, then use the smudger and soften the line until it's not really a line anymore. You can pull this off during the day as long as us use a soft shade of eyeliner and smudge well. If you would like, I can post a close-up of my eye done this way.

try just using an eyeshadow as a liner on lower lashline. It will give you a very soft look. Try a brush like this.... (what I use)

Yay make up! Looks great! I wear some dark shadow halfway under my lower lash line (applied for an small angle brush) pretty much everyday, combined with liquid liner on top.

Also just in case anybody didn't know: you can turn any eyeshadow you have into eyeliner. I use a bit of Visine as a mixing medium, dip an angled eyeliner brush into it and then pick up a bit of shadow with the brush and apply. Voila!

Edit to say: I use dry shadow from my lower lash liner everyday though, not wet. Much softer look as said above. ;)

    Teri, the shadow looks lovely...

    Nice!

  • RoseandJoan replied 13 years ago

I love how the liner works with your eyes and hair. I think you are onto something Aida.

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Cilleena - I'd love to see a close up of this, I THINK I know what you mean but I'm pretty makeup illiterate. I've tried something similar on the top only with black liner, but I could try picking up a lighter color and giving it a go.

Teri - Very pretty! I don't have a dark shadow (need to get some), but I have a medium brown I could try for now. I got a set of brushes for xmas and haven't used them yet, so I'll give this a shot and post when I get it presentable looking :)

Nicoleb - Love the Visine tip, I'll have to try that!

RoseandJoan - Thanks! I was hesitant to wear purple at first but now I really like it.

Aida, just wanted to let you know you inspired me to wear eyeliner today :) I wear it about 6 times a year these days lol. Right up there with how often I now wear eyeshadow. I do the mascara daily now, though, which I never did until my 30's. I was the anomoly cocktail waitress with no makeup ;)

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Yay! How'd it turn out Mo, did you try something new? I'm so slow I'm not sure I have the time to do BOTH liner and mascara every day, but I'm hoping I'll get faster as I get better.
