WIW 05.04 Picture perfect challenge, day 5

(For my YLF blog! Hope you gals don't mind me posting the photos twice ^^ Also, my apologies for posting this so late!)

Tortoises at Dawn, Galapagos Islands by Frans Lanting

Today I had more constraints for my outfit than usual (to be fair, usual is pretty much no constraints) because I attended a typography conference. I wanted to come up with an outfit that was business casual/creative and arty, as well as fit the challenge photo. So I decided what better day than to give my slouchy AT trousers their debut! I probably should've attempted to iron them, though. This was the only challenge I didn't incorporate my hair as a specific element, but I did tie it back to minimize the darkness in the outfit.

I decided to go with the hazy, surreal feeling of the photo and not do quite as literal an interpretation as many of my other outfits for the challenge. I have the color story of the photo, the fluidity of the water (pants, scarf), and the turtles (nails, necklace) all represented in various ways throughout my outfit. The blazer was necessary for business, and actually I never wore it as shown in the right side upper left photo; I DID wear it tee+scarf-blazer during the lectures, but didn't get a photo of that combo.

Because the photo is so very serene, and was taken at dawn rather than dusk, I was more inspired by the lighter shades than the dark; I took the color palette pretty literally, going with rosy tans, taupes, and a bit of gray. It also helps that taupe is my current color obsession :) I didn't have the fashion guts to wear a tucked top with these slouchy pants today, but after wearing this and being quite comfy and happy I think I'm good to tuck for next time!

I have a couple nods to the turtles in the outfit. First off, my necklace has organic hammered circles which loosely resemble the shells; second, I painted my nails a matte dark brown (OT, they looked like chocolate and I kept wanting to nibble), and when I hold my hands together they make a similar "S" shape as the turtles' formation in the photo. I can't tell you all how entertained I was by this ^^

And as an aside, Angie was (of course) 100% right about going for the way slouchier pair of these pants. After catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror at the conference, it all clicked. I totally "get" the vibe now! So thanks for pushing that, Angie :)

If you'd been sitting beside me when I opened your picture, you would have heard my audible "gasp" in awe - YOU LOOK STUNNING! I love you in colour but there's something almost ethereal about you in these beautiful neutral, muted shades. I can't get over what a beautiful match the slouchy trousers (which are amazing on you BTW), the pumps and the scarf are. And then the slightly darker shades in the jacket and the top....wow. Sorry if I'm embarrassing you with my gushing...

Oh, wow, and that vibe totally GETS YOU! This is absolutely fabulous, Aida. Wow. I'm doing some gasping myself.

  • Jenava replied 11 years ago

Very cool. Those pants are amazing!

Aida, I wasn't 100% sold on the slouchy pants when you first posted them but definitely am now. You used texture and color variations to create such a calming and harmonious look. I really like it.

OK, Aida. I added this to my favorites so I can remember what "slouchy pants" should look like! Love the texture and flow of this outfit!

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Oh, wow, Aida, you knocked this one out of the ball park!`

  • christy replied 11 years ago

Beautiful! Love the neutral colors and those pants look terrific on you.

This is STUNNING. You look like a portrait. These pants are the right fit on you for sure. And I can see why they didn't fit me - you have the perfect figure to carry them off.

One of my favorites you've posted yet! Love how you used soft neutrals and dark/light elements with soft transitions (no crisp lines) to mimic the effect of the photo.

If I saw you in this outfit I'd definitely peg you as someone working in a creative field :)

Aida, beautiful muted colors. I love these slouchy pants on you. This also looks so conference appropriate. You look cool, arty and professional. Just lovely.

You surely can wear the slouchy pant trend. Were these the original size you bought or you went up a size? They look really good.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    Masterfully executed!

Oh, WOW, Aida! I am gasping for breath myself! Okay, where do I start? Are these a larger size in your slouchy pants? They look so much more intentional and drape-y this way! (Note to self: when trying on slouchy pants, go for the largest size that does not look sloppy, not the smallest size you can button like you do for skinnies.)

Next! Not only does this color palette ooze sophistication, but the materials are so chic as well. I'm not used to seeing you sans denim. This actually brings to mind the camel and black outfit that you wore with tall boots in the winter. I think you went to a relative's house for a birthday dinner or something, and you were copying someone? Bella perhaps? Anyway, these are two of my very favorite outfits on you EVER. Girlfriend, you can rock these cool neutrals!

Also! These is something very exotic and Persian about the pants and the scarf combo. Do you see what I'm seeing? I'm CRAZY about it on you. Have I made myself perfectly clear? I LOVE THIS OUTFIT! *fanning* Where are my smelling salts?!!!!

Seriously, Aida, you have me thinking about trying slouchy pants! LOL! This is an amazing outfit on you. I love it. Low contrast, slouchy fabulousness.

YAY I'm so glad you all like this outfit as much as I do! It felt wonderful to wear, and I'm excited that these pants are also going to be perfect for my hot-but-not-really-to-anyone-outside-the-PNW summer weather ;) Thanks so mcuh for all the lovely comments ladies, I'm blushing behind my monitor here at work!

Angie, thank you! I am delighted :D

Shannon, Sarah, and Claire, I need extra "blush" buttons for your sweet comments, thank you!

Shannon, I do have a soft (heh) spot for muted colors, even though brights generally suit me better. Discovering that some taupes and tans work for my coloring has really opened up my muted color palette options :D I think that puts me at white/ivory, cream, peachy-blush, camely-tans, taupe, gray, olive. Yummy and soft!

Una, honestly I am quite surprised that these work so well for me! I would assume, as someone with hips, that they wouldn't but here we are. I'll just enjoy the ride ;)

Sammi, thanks! I'm really into those soft line transitions right now. Not sure if that's a style direction change, this season's soft-dressing trend, or just a seasonal thing!

Zap and Claire, these were the regular pants in my usual size (original fit post refresher). I would say these are just slightly slightly large in this size, which suits the vibe perfectly. Claire your observation about going for large-but-not-sloppy sounds spot on.

Claire, sans denim is surely strange for me! I'm actually doing Angie's no-denim challenge this week, so far so good but it's only day two ;) I definitely remember the outfit you're describing, Celia's black/camel/leopard combo. That was one of my favorites too! I guess I should work those no-denim outfits in more often! I also see what you're saying about the exotic pants+scarf vibe, I think that's what draws me to the pants a bit in the first place! With my Arab background, Jasmine was, of course, one of my favorite Disney princesses :)

Kelly, do it! Try the slouchy pants :D

This is off the charts Aida! No offense to everyone else's day 5 interpretation, but you get my vote for #1 best interpretation.

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

Aw Denise, thank you so much! I'm so very flattered <3

(I'm going to have a hard time picking a favorite when I do my week's recap, but this one certainly seems to be the fan fave!)
