WIW Backlog: Event outfits (Oct-Dec)

I decided to separate out a few "event" outfits into their own post, though none of these were for a Truly Dressy Event. This is an area of my wardrobe that is severely lacking, but I am overall pleased with what I was (eventually, after struggles) able to come up with for each of these events without rushing out in a panic to buy something new. Definitely hoping to fill this gap in my wardrobe over the course of this year, though!

#1 : 10.17 - fashion show. One of my husband's coworkers organized a charity global fashion show which he bought tickets for. I felt very appropriately dressed; there was a broad range of dressiness, since the show was hosted at Microsoft and many came straight from work. Sat right in the front along the runway and felt very fashionable ^^

#2 : 11.03 - brother-in-law's birthday dinner. Went to a fancy steakhouse, but I knew dinner would still be a rather casual affair. Another broad range of dress here; I was appropriately dressy for the table, and right in the middle looking at the whole restaurant. Later decided a bodycon sweater dress was a poor decision when there is so much good steak involved ;)

#3 : 11.09 - metal opera. You read that right :) Hubby and I went with a friend to see a local production of a heavy metal opera, and it was super fun! Themed demon ushers, end of the world tragedy, everybody died in the end, all that good stuff. So of COURSE I had to don plenty of black and fluff up my hair! My city is NOT dressy by any means, and this was certainly sufficiently dressy for the event. Loved this! Got several unsolicited compliments on my hair, too.

#4 : 12.24 - burlesque nutcracker. Again, you read that right ;) Had NO idea how dressy this event would be, it was actually out in downtown Seattle so could have gone either way. I decided to play it safe and go in the middle. Reused the formula from #3 but changed the tights to a more burlesque-y option and went with dressier outerwear (and of course some bright red lipstick!). It ended up being rather casual, so I felt perfectly comfy and happy in this. Also super fun, and we're definitely going to hit this up again next year!

#5 : 12.29 - friends xmas party. Casual get together, but I knew my friend who was hosting would be happy with a little extra sparkle. I purchased this tweedy double-collar with metallic threads specifically to wear to this party, but haven't worn it since. Would like to find a way to work it in! Hubby thinks it's ridiculous, unfortunately.

#6 : 12.31 - new years/dad's birthday. Spent at my parents' home as always, since my dad's birthday is the 31st. So I wanted somewhat casual-dressy but mostly cozy. Cashmere sweater + structured pencil + sweater tights was just the ticket.

I love #1 and 4. You rock those blue pumps and the clutch looks super modern. The black/grey dress mixed with leopard print tights is smoking hot. New cream coat is such a great addition to your wardrobe.

I love all your outfits, but #4 and #6 are my favs. The skirt in #6 is beautiful, and that cream coat is gorgeous!

Before I get started I just want to say I LOVE that clutch. Fierce!

#1 -- I'm a sucker for cobalt so this is definitely a favorite.
#3 &4 I love the patterned tights. Your bodycon dresses are so flattering on you.
#6 is the dark horse I love the muted color palette and the splash of red in the print. I love this look!

I actually love all of these looks and would copy them all if I could. You look smashing!

Actually love the sparkly collar on you! You go to some very original events - and look fantastic in every one. I love the bodycon dress and cobalt is gorgeous on you. I am also very impressed how you mixed the bright skirt with the neutrals. I need to take notes!

All of those are amazing Aida. I especially like #1 and #4 - those blue shoes in #1 are stunning and I adore the combo of dress and tights in #4.

These are all wonderful. 3 and 4 are my faves - the argyle tights are brilliant!

Hey, so are you buying anything new or shopping your closet recently?

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the comments ladies, I appreciate the detail! Happy to hear #6 is going over well, that was a rather experimental look ^^

Shevia, "original" is a good word for it ;) My husband is very good at finding those fun events!

Una, good question. Not on SYC, but I've realized I have a hard time shopping for fall/winter clothing. I am actually not too happy with the state of my f/w stuff (most of it is too big now, not warm enough, not quite right stylistically etc.), and fairly happy with s/s stuff. I love the season so I think it's just the timing; Oct-Dec is ridiculously busy and there is already a lot of $$ being spent at that time, so my wardrobe suffers. This year I made sure to do most of my fall shopping during both NAS and the LA meetup, which was a big help. So really what I need to do is save up, then force myself to go more often early on in the season or else it just doesn't get done! Spring shopping is already under way 0:)

I am so glad I caught this thread. Because I hereby deem this my favorite set of outfits from you, EVER! #4 -- for the burlesque Nutcracker -- looks like something coming out of Milan fashion week. And #6 looks like you are walking out of a brownstone from NY's Upper East Side. Elegant and polished.

#4 is stunning! It's elegant, edgy and very you. And tell hubby I love that collar! What else have you tried it with?

  • Ornella replied 11 years ago

You gorgeous, creative creature. I'm catching up with a lot myself (and organizing kiddo's bday party) so don't have too much time for detailing commenting, but that dress in #3 and #4 is divine backdrop for just about anything. Gorgeous outfits. *swoon*

Well, you may be behind in posting your outfits, but your clearly keeping up your standards! I adore cobalt, so you have me there. I also really like #4. #5 however, is a great inspiration to me. You manage to wear that sparkly collar without any hint of twee, and the sweater pairing is perfect. Very fab and fresh.

  • MNsara replied 11 years ago

#1 - perfect casual elegant outfit for you and for that sort of event.

Love your cute tights with the dresses and boots! You wear those sweater dresses perfectly too.

So, that's just a collar in #5? So perfect for that sweater! Just wear it to work someday. See how it feels. Carry along a scarf and swap them out if you need to ;-)

Have i said how adorable your hair cut is??!!! It absolutely suits you SO perfectly and enhances every outfit :-)

Thanks for all the lovely comments, ladies! :D Most of these came out of some pretty good angst at not having proper event attire, even though later I was happy enough with how they turned out.

Denise, thank you for your especially sweet comment! I need a blush button over here <3

Deborah and MNsara, I haven't tried the collar with much actually! It is comfy enough to wear but I seem to lack enough high-necked things to pair it with :) Most of my tops have deeper V-necks so there's a silly little gap when I add the collar; that could be part of the problem. I might need to post it for some suggestions!
