WIW 11.18 [slouchy hat and winter shorts]

Quick post of today's outfit to help me get back into the swing of things! Worn to work, a few errands, then out for tacos later tonight.

Started with my beloved charcoal wool shorts and the slouchy plummy-burgundy hat, and decided it'd be fun \to wear with my cranberry turtleneck. Went for the easy pairing of black tights + black booties; I do rather wish I'd worn black ribbed sweater tights with this though, for both the added textural interest and the added warmth! It all felt a little dark so I popped my boxy cropped white-ish denim moto over the top, and pulled the sweater's long sleeves down for a cozier vibe. Finished the look off with some glam/rock elements: cranberry lipstick, leather-sleeved burgundy moto coat, faux-fur leo print clutch, and my biggest sunnies.

  Newer: moto, hat, booties, clutch
Older: sweater, shorts, tights, coat, watch

As an aside, I'm happy to report that I'm getting more used to the sight and feeling of wearing these black booties; my other black pair, which are far more masculine (haven't shown you gals yet) is another story ><

So fabulous! And these black booties should be well within your comfort zone - whether you feel like it or not!  They are perfect for your style.  Isn't it funny how we all struggle with different things?  I can't get over your skill with light footwear, and it makes me giggle that you're having any doubts about dark footwear.

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Thank you Una! Believe it or not, these felt both too dark and too chunky the first few times I wore them. I love these booties (and the other pair for that matter, see below; I'll try to get an outfit with them later this week), but man some of those pesky hangups sure do get in the way sometimes. I'm definitely coming around though! I'm very glad to have a footwear support group here even if I am a bit backwards about it ^^

Great outfit - I like the surprise element of the shorts. I am fascinated by your bootie issues, with your hair black boots would be a shoe in (hahaha, I just woke up can you tell?).

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

Aida, I feel about light footwear the way you feel about dark footwear! You did a great job of styling this outfit. I like the white-ish denim moto, I don't know that I would have thought to add that but I sure do like the look of it.

Can't wait to see how you style the second pair of booties :)

I am in love with your coat!

And the black booties look fab on you! I'd never guess you had issues with them! They're great with the shorts and tights. I hope we get to see the other pair soon too!

Wow, this is one of my favorite outfits of yours. I like how you added the white moto to lighten things up. You look great in cranberry! And I'm glad you're getting used to the booties...they really add a lot to the outfit. :)

Great outfit! I love the colors together--the berries and plum with charcoal and off-white. The tights look charcoal to me, too, in the photo. I think they have an effect that is softer than black, and I like the way they look with the shorts and booties. The light jacket really sets off the other pieces nicely, and your coat is the perfect addition.  Glad to see you're enjoying these booties, because they look fab on you.

Love the dark footwear!! I think irs funny that you have the opposite problem as me! I think the silver chains kind of brightens the shoe and makes it look less severe. Brilliant how you added white on top. Can't believe you can layer a coat over it too! Gorgeous colors and fab shorts! You look amazing!

I love this entire outfit. The coat especially, but I'm very fond of your booties. Too.

This outfit showcases something you are unbeatable at doing: successful play on structure. I love it! From the short, chunky booties to the slouchy tuque, everything in between is artfully layered. Adorable results: accent on long legs, cropped jacket's perkiness, classic sweater...  Even the sunglasses are an exquisite finishing touch.

Absolutely love this on you, Aida. You look amazing, from the (dark) tip of your toe to the curly top of your head. Shorts and tights to me is a tough look to love (don't ask me why -- there's no reason -- it's kind of like your fear of dark footwear!), but you make it look like something I would want to emulate.

I agree with everyone else here - this is so cool and such a pretty look!  I LOVE shorts and tights but have never worn them myself. It just looks so different and interesting.  And those are boots after my own heart :)

p.s. cranberry is an excellent colour on you too

You make the winter shorts look terrific, Aida!  The cranberry is a wonderful choice for this time of year.  As for the booties?  Well, I'm one of those who, for years, seem to only have black shoes.......... I guess I really do see them as a basic.  These booties are a big step up from basic!

Thanks very much, ladies! I appreciate all the great feedback, comments, and commiseration. There are many reasons I'm happier in lighter footwear, and I plan to continue with that style decision moving forward. But I do want to get myself reacquainted with the darker stuff again so I have more options! So far, so good.

Sharan, you're right the tights certainly do have a softer-than-black feel because they're a bit sheer. I think I was a little too optimistic in not going for the heavier opaque or sweater tights yesterday, though ;)

Kelly, I've taken Angie's advice to buy coats large enough to layer a jacket underneath to heart! Extremely helpful. This particular coat is a bit more fitted than my others, though, so it's a bit trickier to layer with.

Krish, thank you for the detailed and sweet comment! After several years of not really layering, it's been fun to flex those muscles again this season. Nice to hear that it's working well ^^

  • krishnidoux replied 9 years ago

Aida, I always have associated your style to a careful and well thought out reunion of items in terms of structure on your frame. Not necessarily layers - however you do it like a pro - but it's also about where you put the accent on your body, and your ability to dress the rest accordingly. I am glad you have decided to flex the layer muscles and will be looking out for the resulting outfits !

  • crutcher replied 9 years ago

Love your style...the dark boots are just spot on...I especially like the slouchy hat which speaks to me...I am in the season of slouchy hats just now...smile...

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

What Sharan said. You make the winter shorts look so natural. Your second pair of black booties don't look masculine to me because of the pointed toe and general refinement. You could up the girly even more by wearing them with fishnets, maybe black over grey tights?

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

I am taking note, Aida. I love this look with the shorts and wonder if I could ever pull it off. I love my black slouchy shorts, but since they are linen I think they'd read too summery. Your booties are awesome. Can't wait to see the other ones. The cranberry is so punchy I just love it.

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 9 years ago

I've always admired the heavy shorts in Fall/Winter looks, though have never worn it myself.  Bonus that you found comfortable boots... Like the second pair you showed and look forward to seeing those styled as well..

  • Sara L. replied 9 years ago

Ooh I love this outfit! Love the shorts and tights. I have never found the right pair of shorts to create these type of outfits. The rich colors look fabulous here.

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Thanks, ladies! I appreciate all the wonderful feedback.

Krish, thank you again for such an insightful comment. You've just made me realize, coinciding with Angie's post on variation this morning, that it's not just silhouette/color/pattern where I look for and desire variation; different kinds of proportions are also an important variation for me. Tweaking the structural points so that a less-than-conventional proportion works is key, and certainly something I enjoy with fashion!

Joy, great suggestion! I'll have to work my way up to that :) Of all masculine fashion elements, footwear is where I'm least comfortable with it.

Jackie, the linen probably would look a bit odd in winter. But on warmer fall days you could wear with tall boots! You totally rock shorts, I'm fairly certain we need to find you a wintery woolen pair.

  • unfrumped replied 9 years ago

REally great outfit! I love the proportions and colors.
I like to wear cranberry and gray and black but don't have much actual wardrobe white. But, your outfit has inspired me to figure ways to include at least some accents somewhere.

  • suzyq replied 9 years ago

I like this!  I would never think of the white topper and it looks so good--makes the berry colors pop.  Nice choice.

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

    Thanks Unfrumped and Suzyq!

Unfrumped, adding the white to the cranberry/gray/black combo really perks it up. As you said, it can just be little accents of it. Bright orange is also fun :)
