WIW 11.09-10 (anniversary in Portland)

This past weekend hubby and I took a short weekend trip down to Portland to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary; we'd been wanting to check out Multnomah Falls for a while so we figured we'd pop down to check out the falls and eat some delicious food! We had enough time to stop at two falls, Wahkeena (#3 left) and Multnomah (#3 right), though it was already getting dark by the time we got there. After that we had dinner at one of my favorite places, Kale (Japanese curry), and then found a neat little bar that was quite literally under ground (you took a staircase cut into the sidewalk to head underneath the building above). The next morning we had a tasty breakfast at one of the nearby hotels, and then headed back home. A fun, albeit short, low key trip :D

Here are my super casual outfits for the super casual weekend, along with some pretty pictures of the falls. #1 is what I wore on Saturday, #4 is what I wore on Sunday. Sartorial choices based on the following:

- The bulk of the weekend was spent in the car (it's about a 3.5 hour drive each way) so car comfort was top priority; stretchy twill pants and loose sweaters are great for that.
- We pack very lightly when we travel; the two outfits are essentially the same, swapping one sweater for another.
- Thirdly, I figured there might be a small hike to get to the falls (there was, and we did), plus a bunch of city walking; enter the rugged but cushioned leather boots.
- And lastly, there's always a chance of rain so a waterproof jacket was a must; I didn't feel like brining a trench, and instead brought a pleather jacket and a short lightweight puffer for nighttime.

And as always, we're terrible about getting photos with both of us in them. So here's the best one I have from the weekend (#2), taken after the short hike, complete with magical waterfall sparkles in the air.

Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome!

[EDIT: OK, had to add an alternate outfit shot that hubby took of me with waterfalls because I liked the photo ^^]

Awww. Congratulations! You are such a cute couple. I love Portland and hope to go back someday. It sounds like you had fun, and your outfits were pure perfection for the activities planned. Waving at my weekend travel friend!

You look Oregon perfect.  I have half my family there, spent my summers there, was just there visiting my sister, aunts uncles and son at the U of O!

So you look amazing. And congrats on 8 years of marriage. You guys are adorable. --K

Your outfit is so great.  It looks very casual and yet is full of texture and interest. And can I say I just love your hair!

My husband is from this area, and we hope to eventually make it back to the PNW now that he is retired. Gorgeous country, and you look lovely, too. :)

  • shevia replied 6 years ago

Happy Anniversary! You and the waterfall are stunning and you and DH look like a match made in heaven. I like the light scarf next to your face. I think I like the second version slightly better but you look amazing in both.

Great pics!  And happy anniversary!  :)  I have friends who got engaged on the bridge in picture #3.  It's a gorgeous spot.

  • Amy replied 6 years ago

Happy anniversary! You two are such a good looking couple :)

  • E replied 6 years ago

What a gorgeous walk!!! The PNW is high on my list of places I'd love to visit. :) Both of your outfits look great: I love how they're practical without looking gearish. Those wide stripes are very flattering on you too.

Beautiful pics of the falls! I really like the jacket and boot bookends. Happy anniversary!

You are such a gorgeous couple!  What a fun trip.  Happy anniversary!

What a beautiful spot and you look perfect for your trip. You know your style so well and really own it. Happy anniversary!

Happy anniversary, and looks like you had a great time. I love the soft colours of your outfit.

  • O replied 6 years ago

I will read it all later (can't wait!), I have only checked the photos, but I wanted to say this is the good old Aida-post, the kind I was missing so much.

  • Emily replied 6 years ago

Happy Anniversary!  It looks like you had a wonderful trip, the pictures are beautiful.  You balanced function and style beautifully.

  • Lisa replied 6 years ago

Congratulations on 8 years!  And lovely falls, sounds like a fun trip.  Your outfit is perfect for a stylish and casual day.

Happy anniversary!  You look fab and lovely.  The photos of the falls are beautiful too.

BTW, You must be a super well connected foodie--hardly anyone knows about Kale! I love that place.  So delicious.  I'm always singing its praises to people.  It really deserves a lot more attention than it gets.  I wonder if their very nondescript location is holding them back.  And isn't that fourth picture taken on top of the smart park parking garage right near Nordstrom and Kale?

    Great, great, great.

I started reading and wondered whether it was Tetris-style-packing this time too, but then you mentioned the car journey. Still, this *is* Tetris and something you're so good at. You have essentially the same outfit x2, but they look completely different because the sweaters are different themselves.

I loved reading your thought process and once again feel I've learned so much from you. I can't wait for my next trip now.

The waterfalls are beautiful and you both look adorable. Happy anniversary.

Great pics! Sometimes those quick escapes are the best. Happy anniversary.

  • Mo replied 6 years ago

Congrats!  I lived a bit to the east of there for a summer (between Hood River and The Dalles).  Lovely country.

  • deb replied 6 years ago

Beautiful pictures of you and the falls.

  • Aida replied 6 years ago

Thanks for all the lovely comments! Happy I could share our little trip with you gals ^^ For those who have a Portland trip (or hopeful trip!) in their future, if you have some extra time the falls are a great side trip; they're only 30 min from the city on a very pretty scenic highway that follows the Columbia River.

Suz, I was amused at how different our packing strategies for our travel weekends were! Totally different needs of course, but definitely on the opposite ends hehe

AviaMariah, I am finding that I try to have more and more textural interest in casual outfits, especially since I keep those quite simple. It can really up the visual interest on those types of outfits, and of course in fall/winter adds an extra vibe of coziness. And thank you for the hair compliment :D

Brenda, aw how fun! We weren't able to get to the Multnomah bridge because it was nearly dark by the time we got there, but we're definitely planning on visiting again in spring so we can hike up there.

K, ah that's right you're from Portland! We should get coffee (or tea!) sometime when I'm there for a longer trip. We always try to hunt down good local food in Portland, there's just so much of it. I LOVE Kale, I'm surprised more people don't know about them. I'm sure that stalled building project next to them doesn't help, either. The photos in #4 were taken at a garage on ummmm 6th and Alder I think, indeed just a few blocks from Nordies and Kale. Good eye, girl!

Ornella, hehe no true Tetris packing on this trip! Although, I kind of wish I brought a second scarf to change up day two's look a bit more especially since it wouldn't really take additional room. I do enjoy coming up with packing capsules though. (I attended a 5-day conference back in August and had the whole suitcase to myself, and indulged in all different outfits each day; it felt very luxurious ^^)

Happy anniversary, Aida, you two are so cute. Did you plan your outfits to meld with the beautiful scenery? The bottom left waterfall photo in 3 reminds me of a wedding veil :)

  • Aida replied 6 years ago

Hah, Pil I didn't plan it that way but I did notice as soon as we took the first outfit photo up there! I almost wore faded gray jeans, so good thing I went with the olive so I could fit in properly with the surroundings ^^

  • rae replied 6 years ago

congrats! On the anniversary and on being the world's m most photogenic couple. :) I would love to visit Portland someday. We once hiked by some falls in the Seattle area, and it is one of my favorite memories.

  • replied 6 years ago

Happy Anniversary (belated).  Super fun casual look, I did the same this week for the mountains- sweater, ralaxed jeans, boots.
Great pics of the falls, I love it there.  The first time I went DH pointed up at the tiny tiny people at the top of the falls and said "lets go up".. It was a good hike to the top.

  • K. Period. replied 6 years ago

Aida, yes! I would love it! Message me next time you are in for a longer stay. Two of my favorite coffee haunts are downtown: Spella and Public Domain.

  • Day Vies replied 6 years ago

Gorgeous pictures! I think your outfit is perfect for your activities but looks pulled together. I love how the pink scarf works with the olive jeans. The white top and cognac jacket are nice supporting colors and pieces. I like how you do casual! (Marking as favorite!)

  • Marmee replied 6 years ago

Awww.  What a cute couple.  Your outfits are great and I admire your light packing mentality.

  • Aida replied 6 years ago

Thank you for the wonderful comments, ladies!

Rae, hah I wish that were the case; I cannot tell you how many photos we deleted before we got that one ;) I didn't know you liked hiking! If you ever make it out my way, my place is really close to a lot of amazing hikes (just sayin!).

K, ooh I am not familiar with either of those places! We're usually just down for a weekend, but sometimes longer. I'll definitely be messaging you if there's an hour extra on our next trip!

DV, thanks! I actually struggle mightily with this type of casual dressing since most of my wardrobe isn't truly casual. Especially in the footwear department. So any time I can actually come up with something that works for function and form I get super excited.

  • Beth Ann replied 6 years ago

What gorgeous Falls!  So worth the drive.  I'm always happy to hear of couples taking time to get away together.

You outfits are soft in color and silhouette and rich in texture.  Love the boots, and the way you manage to hike without resorting to full on gear!

  • peacechick replied 6 years ago

Happy anniversary! I hope to visit Portland one day, I hear so much about how artistic it is. I think you were perfectly dressed, casual yet interesting with the colors and accessories. I love that wide striped sweater!

  • Lantana replied 6 years ago

Thank you so much for sharing the waterfall photos, they are magnificent.
I like your casual outfit and your rationale has given me some good tips for an up-coming holiday which will similarly involve a lot of car travel.
