WIW 10.09 [shorts, boots, and plaid-on-plaid (on plaid)]

Since today is probably our last day that'll get up near 70F for a good looong while (sad), I wanted to get one last bare-legged shorts + tall boots look in. I hadn't done one with plaid this season yet (!) so out came my favorite plaid shirt. I've actually got a silver layering tank underneath, which would only be
visible if I'm stretched out and reaching for something. These silky shorts are also just about done for the season; I'll wear a couple more times with tights before it's too cold for them, and they'll go into hibernation as well.

Initially I pulled on tall black boots but it felt too heavy. The next option was brown which didn't excite me... until I thought about adding even more plaid to the mix! Enter my new double-plaid scarf that I bought during SSIF. I had reservations since I haven't been wearing my scarves as much in recent years, but the double plaid print was too fun to pass up -- the large plaid runs down the center lengthwise for about half the width, and the smaller plaid flanks it on either side for a quarter width apiece. Plus it's gigantic (plus) and wool (more plus) yet lightweight (total plus!). As for the crazy "tie" uhhhh well I just made that up this morning -- I'm calling it the "Jumbled Knot", and have also posted a How-To for it.

With the crazy scarf in place, I chose my slouchy brown boots and went with minimal jewelry (copper pyramid stud studs and my trusty rose gold watch). I was going to use my black foldover clutch but caught a glimpse of this one with the outfit in the mirror when I went to swap contents and decided I liked it more; more cheerful and, well, clearly there's not enough print already ;) Hair up to stay out of the scarf's way and add a little structure, and shirt left untucked to add to the easy-going feel. And finished off with a swipe of plum lip gloss, which certainly "goes" but doesn't at all "match".

  Newer: tank, scarf, clutch
  Older: shirt, shorts, boots

A great look, and very creative. I love how you explain your thought process that went into the choice for each element of your outfits. And where are those fabulous slouchy boots from?

    Totally works.  Well done!

Fun! Obviously you cannot have too much plaid! :-) The shorts look unexpected with tall boots (but interesting).
I am envious of your warm weather: I had to scrape the first frost from my windshield this morning :-(

That's a lot of plaid going on! And it works nicely. What a fun outfit. I can't believe you're wearing shorts. Although I guess it was warm this afternoon. Wear 'em while you can!

Fun fun fun!  Black boots or bag would have been wrong, so definitely the right call.

You and Neel with the shorts and plaid! So jealous - it was 20 degrees this morning here. Love the messy scarf thing - off to check your tute.

What a fun mix!  Love the playful tomboy quality!

You mix three patterns and pair black and brown and still look totally cohesive. Yes that is my compliment for today cohesive :-)!

You are SO ADORABLE, I could eat you up. xo

Love the plaid mania with the brown boots! I might have to copy with ankle boots ^_^ Although it would be a while before I pull out my chunky scarfs again.

Such a fun outfit, love all the plaids!  Enviable of your weather as well.

I love the shorts and boots.  The plaids all look good together and (surprisingly)I like the patterned clutch.  I'm not usually into lots of pattern mixing but you're able to pull this off while I would probably look like I got dressed in the dark if I tried this. Definitely an expert only outfit.

Thanks so much ladies! I had a lot of fun with this outfit, and if we still had the weather for it I'd definitely sport it again. Hmm perhaps I could don again soon with sheer black tights added (and topped with my new plaid coat) or with my heavier wool shorts. Oooor perhaps in the spring with springier versions of the shirt and scarf. Scheming! Either way I'm definitely filing it away to bring out again next fall :D

Karie, the boots are several years old and were actually one of my first purchases to push my style shortly after joining YLF. I think they're by Not Rated in a style called "Boystown".

Sveta, well Angie did give me the go-ahead on my not being able to have too much plaid so it's incumbent of me to pile them all on at the same time right??

Una, I know you don't wear scarves much but I could see you in this hectic knot. Believe it or not, it actually photographs a little neater than it looks in person.

Jaime, hah when put like that it sounds crazier than it looks! ;)

Neel, I think the knot would work quite well with a lightweight gauzy scarf, as long as it's not too silky (or it won't stay put).

Sara, sometimes I'm sure "dressed in the dark" is how I come across to some people (hubby included, heh). I just roll with it :)

The two plaids and animal clutch are seriously brilliant pattern mixing!  And I love your love of shorts, I think it's one of the signatures of your style.
