WIW 09.16 [seasons challenge: tall snowy trees]

For the third day of the challenge, I chose the tall snowy trees (#3).

[Challenge info and guidelines posted here.]

The black and white was an obvious choice here, but I actually found the shapes of this image most inspiring -- tall dark trees blanketed with snow, branches overlapping as they reach out.

To mimic the somewhat chaotic "pattern" the branches create I chose a mixed-plaid silky blouse which I buttoned to-the-top and left untucked for maximum vertical integrity. New-to-me waxed black skinnies (thanks Una!) to mimic the dark trunks, and white pumps for the heaps of white snow on the ground. I also added my long white blazer as a nod to the snow on the trees themselves, though I'm spending most of the day with it off. However I'm particularly glad to have it as I had an unexpected meeting today! Styled my hair more wavy as a nod to the stillness/life-on-hold the photo evokes (the fully bouncy curls didn't feel quite right for it, though I prefer that look to this). And accessorized with long gold earrings for a little extra vertical element and peachy-nude lipstick for its muted simplicity.

Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome.

I don't know how waxed skinnies and black and white can be soft and serene but you've somehow managed to do just that. I love how you've managed to convey that quiet and absolute stillness of a snowy forest. Really impressive!

I love your interpretation of the tall snowy trees. The white jacket looks great over the top of the shirt and the waxed skinnies. Love the combination of pattern and texture and the high value contrast between the black and white which harmonises with your natural colouring. You look great.

Killer to the Power of Killer

SO GLORIOUSLY '80s. All you need is a brooch on your high neck shirt.

    *inserts more shoulder pads*

This is fabulous! One of my favorite outfits of yours! Nicely done!

You rocked this challenge, girlfriend! I love those waxed skinnies. I'm also loving the longer length on your blazer.

Thanks very much for the comments, tickled this is going over well. I was just thinking this morning that this silhouette doesn't feel at all "new" (I know many people feel tired of skinnes+heels, but that'll always be a mainstay for my style) yet still feels current enough. Goes to show how updated denim and blazer styles can freshen up a standard silhouette!

Diana, I too was really pleased with how soft the outfit turned out! I think the soft blouse (material and print), soft blazer, long lines, and hair down all help with that. Also these jeans are ridiculously soft and comfortable, which has been a major surprise!

Angie, hah yes! I do loves me a shoulder pad (this blazer has 'em), though I know most other ITs don't ^^

Karie, this is my only jacket at this long length; almost all my others are cropped or nearly-cropped. I am quite enjoying it, it feels very different!

Wow -- this is stunning on you! I really love the 80s feel of it. And those pants are fantastic on you.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Love this! Wow that white blazer is smashing on you and the blouse is also fab. I also love how you can analyze each detail and produce such a beautiful result.

That shirt and that clutch... PERFEEEEEECT!
You nailed this one! Love it :)

    Loving this, so rock star!

I love all the elements of this look, and how they work together.
Love the blazer. I need something like this :-)
The low heel still looks pretty high but comfortable. Another thing to think about getting for summer next year :)

Perfect interpretation, love your rock star outfits, Aida!

*PLONK* ...Wow! You look amazing! Love this from H to T. I also really enjoyed reading all about the elements of your outfit and how they relate to the photo. :)

This is wonderful, Aida.  You always pay such amazing attention to detail with these challenges - even down to taming your lovely curls.

  • donnat replied 8 years ago

Absolutly love your outfit, and you hair is perfect.

Nothing wrong with a bit of extra IT shoulder padding, Aida. We need them as Retro '80s gals. We compensate beautifully when we take them out as Retro '70s gals.

Great look!  I love the pattern on your top.  I tried on a long white blazer last weekend but wasn't sure when I would wear it.  Now I'm thinking I should have bought it.  Maybe I should look at some of your other photos and see if I can make it work with my wardrobe.

Game over. I think you won all the challenges with this one post. So gorgeously interpreted.

  • kerlyn replied 8 years ago

Gorgeous, Aida! I allmost forgot to look at the inspiration photo!

  • Sal replied 8 years ago

Wonderful look with the plaid pattern echoing the trees.
I love the jeans and jacket combination - really fun.

Skinnies and heels may not be fresh, but it looks SO GOOD. You look fierce. I love that top, too.

  • Aida replied 8 years ago

Goodness, thank you all for the lovely comments ladies! Blushing over here.

Smittie, the heels are 2" and stable, so quite easy to walk in. Also buttery soft leather. I highly recommend them, and they come in all sorts of colors (check the link in the find below; I think Amazon also has several colors of them, too).

Sara, I haven't had a chance to wear this blazer a lot yet (been too warm) but definitely plan to over fall and winter. It seems like it'll be a great option on cooler days because of the longer length.

  • replied 8 years ago

Aida, I need buttery soft leather, and oh wow! only $90! That's a pretty great deal.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

This is probably the best outfit in the challenge. Your attention to details and the fact that it is so stylish makes it a winner. I am also impressed how you captured the mood of the inspiration photo. It deserves Angie's K2K rating.

  • Aida replied 8 years ago

Smittie, yes they're a great deal! I am thinking of ordering a backup pair in the white, I wear them tons.

    Joy, thank you very much!

  • catgirl replied 8 years ago

Those jeans really are perfect on you! So glad you took them in payment for taxiing me around.

  • Aida replied 8 years ago

Yay glad you caught this Una! Can't wait to play with these jeans some more, thank you again <3
