WIW 07.29 [refreshing a favorite formula]

Today I dusted off a favorite summer formula I haven't been sporting much: summer sweater + baggy short shorts + short boots. Though it usually manifests strongly in the summer, I've been toying with the idea of adding a little more boho flair to my fall/winter wardrobe (we'll see). For the most part that side of my style has taken more of a back seat this year, but it's still there and I still like it; my curls always add a boho touch, and many days that's been the extent of it. This formula tends to skew boho by default since nearly all of the boots that I wear in summer fall into that category, and perhaps that's why I haven't been wearing it much this season -- been really into my pointy and ankle-strap footwear! For today, I am enjoying a refreshed older staple look: the shorts and boots are from previous years but the formula feels perfectly updated with a very current, very oversized sweater. (The rose gold booties I've been considering would be another fun way to refresh this.)

Without the semi-tuck the open-weave knit of this sweater causes some grinning; since it's low contrast against my skin and not that open a weave, I skipped layering a tank underneath which gives a much smoother look. In the sunlight you catch a glimpse of my outline beneath, a very subtle effect which I quite like. Plus it helps keep it as breezy as it can be (the linen content helps otherwise). Accessorized with warm tones -- gold filigree earrings, tan and neon orange clutch -- and a swipe of soft pink lipstick. I really like how the final mix is both soft and graphic. Definitely falls into my royal realm of Modern 70s With A Touch Of 80s, which makes me feel happiest. A bucketload of sun doesn't hurt, either :D

These pictures of you are particularly nice, as you say, perhaps it's that summer sun and cheer. You look a bit music festival boho, but you nicely avoided the excess with the clutch (as opposed to a fringed bag.

Wow Aida - how pretty you are!  I looove your hair.  Love the classy summer boho look on you - it is a great formula for casual wear. I've always wished i had a pair of short boots that were summer-appropriate because I love this look too.

This oversized sweater again - and how you rock it, girl! Love the proportions here so much - too bad I cannot wear such short shorts or I would copy it in a heartbeat!
I also love you spot for picture taking - is it in your backyard? I struggle to find a good spot, especially in the evening - all colors are either washed out or flooded with the evening light.

Maybe you can give me a couple of picture taking lessons in Seattle? :-)

Oh so perfect for a Seattle summer day. I love this look. Nice juxtaposition between the tailored shorts and drapery sweater.

    love the look.

This look is so you and maybe even your signature style.  You've got a great look and I like how your curls set everything off.  After chemo my hair is more curly!  Interesting to play with.

You certainly picked a great uniform! I love reading your descriptions and why you chose what you did.

Wow! Everything Sveta said. You look amazing in the short shorts and I love the way the oversized sweater de-bombshells the look. Also love the sharp, modern accessories with the softness of the sweater and shorts.

And I am smiling also to see you wearing your Reports. I'm sad to say that mine have got no wear this summer...I seem to wear my cage sandals at times when I might have reached for them. But they are still in the closet and I hope to put them to work soon.

Very nice! I like how the back hemline of the sweater is almost the same length as your shorts. The booties make this look ultra current, and I love the pop of color from the purse.

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

This looks so perfectly current to me, despite the "older" shorts and booties. The combination of the oversized sweater and short shorts is perfect to my eye - and I am not a short shorts person at all. Very polished boho and beautiful too!

Oh, I love this! I have ignored my short shorts a a lot in the past years but pulled them out more this year. So nice with a loose, long sleeve.

I love the long loose/short tailored combo here. Just the right amount of modern too. Such a lovely look!

You pulled together a great outfit! I love how the colors are simple and classic. You look modern, but the earrings add "fun and funky."

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I had been feeling that perhaps this wasn't a look that would resonate as much this season as it had over the past two, but I'm happy to hear that's not the case.

Sveta, ah yes I'd be more than happy to share some photo tips with you. Most photographers probably wouldn't agree with this, but I find that flat light (e.g. cloudy or shaded) is best for an outfit photo so I purposefully look for that. These photos are in my driveway (my sunny spot); the ones with the bark are on my back patio (my shady spot). If the sun is hitting the camera lens, then I use one of my husband's baseball caps as a lens hood. I usually take my photos between 10am-1pm; for evening photos, I do usually add red+yellow back into the photo on the computer, since as you noted the colors really wash out. Setting the white balance correctly can solve a lot of these issues in the evening if you're in the shade; flooded sunlight is trickier. We can discuss this when you're in town! Or you can PM me :)

San, how lovely to see you! I hope you are doing well. Interesting thought about this being a signature look of mine. I hadn't really thought of that, but you are right! Also interesting to hear that your hair texture changed to more curly, I hope you are having fun with it.

Suz, you know I've only worn the Reports a handful of times this summer; in my case I've been reaching for my pointy ankle strap flats instead! But they are such a favorite (and so darn comfortable) that I plan to keep them until they fall apart, even if there are seasons where they see less wear.

Angie, David is doing well, as productive as ever :) I need to send him out to the driving range or out on the dirt bike, he's mostly been working on personal projects and cleaning!
