WIW 07.17-20 (first week with short hair!)

I was very excited to see how my wardrobe feels with the new cut! I wouldn't say the cut is wardrobe item revolutionary, but it does take one less "accessorizing" step out in the morning (deciding how I'm going to style my hair for a particular outfit), and I love how it adds auto-spunk to everything (which I'd been using my high pony for). Will keep an eye out for any subtle style shifts. Nearly all of these are outfits I had jotted down to try quite a while back, that for some reason or other hadn't been worn yet. Because of that there's not a big change in style of my outfits of this week, though I have started eyeing some pieces that are more classic which I hadn't been wearing much lately.

One interesting thing I did notice after looking through this week's photos: I wore a lot more black than usual! I think with the longer hair it was dramatic enough to be a dark focal point on its own, and with the shorter hair it feels like I need a little more darkness to balance out. 3 of the 4 feature a good dose of black (and even the 4th has a little bit of black), whereas usually it'd be the reverse proportions (at least for summer).

  1. Tuesday; worn to work, then had a friend over to keg homebrew. I've had this outfit in my head for quite a while, and was happy that it finally "felt right" with the shorter hair. I know a lot of people don't like to wear black and orange together but I love it, especially with a healthy dose of white added in. And some bright cobalt doesn't hurt, either ;) Haven't worn these giant doorknocker earrings in a while, but I love how they looked buried in the shorter curls.
  2. Wednesday; worn to the post office, work, and stopping for take out for dinner. Been wanting to give these silky cargos another styling try; they're still a bit out of my comfort zone but I really like them, drop crotch and all. Was feeling bright so I went with bright turquoise and bright orange, with a nude shoe to keep things a little more toned down. Felt very sporty in this one.
  3. Thursday; worn to Nordstrom for NAS presale, mechanic, and out to dinner. Last summer I wore a LOT of this color combo, but for some reason haven't been into it much this year. Now that I have white jeans it's been popping into my head again. I wanted something comfy and easy to shop in for NAS, and specifically pants because I find shopping for tops in skirts never works out. However, it was WAY too hot for pants; needless to say the blazer didn't get worn much!
  4. Friday; worn for date night (sushi and a movie). First time wearing this linen shirt out (and it managed to rub a ton of orange off onto my white bag >< ). I quite liked how it looked paired with the gray jeans when I did the K/R post, but swapped to flats because hubby prefers them to heels.

Well, I adore your new do. "Auto-spunk" is the perfect word to describe what it gives you. I love these outfits with the combinations of black, white or neutral, and pops of color. They are terrific.

I totally agree! You look stunning, Aida!! I don't know if the hair cut has anything to do with it or not, but these photos show a confidently chic lady! Well done! And thanks for posting :-)

First of all - your hair is absolutely GORGEOUS Aida!

What I really notice about all of these outfits are the strong colours and contrasts...orange with black/white stripes; teal and black; red, white and black; orange and grey. All gorgeous combinations. Love them all!

Yay, autospunk! Interesting about wearing more black, too. I definitely notice your shoulders and necklines more with the short hair, even more than when you wore a pony. It's like the parts that do hang down point to the area. Pretty flattering!

Wow, I missed the haircut post! You look fantastic in this style. So excited for you. And I love all these strong contrasts. That striped dress looks so wonderful with the jacket. Actually, it looks wonderful, full stop. I'll bet it could be a real summer workhorse.

I adore your new haircut and love each one of your outfits. I think your haircut shows off your outfits even more. All together it's just fantastic!

You're doing really well with my pants. I love #3.

Great outfits, but I have to say that the haircut is revolutionary, IMHO. I always thought your hair was pretty, but this style just adds so much polish and attitude to your look! I love it.

Love all of these Aida and the new do is totally fab! Just wonder if there is too much scrunch on the jeans in 3 &4. I have been guilty of this myself so I tend to be sensitive to this. I am guessing you normally wear heels with these pants?

Aida: I love the soft, swing of your hair! Overall, I'm impressed with the way you use strong color without being overwhelmed by it --- so modern and clean!

I love your new haircut! Great week! #1 is my favorite.

Totally fabulous looks, and I love your haircut! I agree with everyone else that the haircut looks so chic and pretty on you, and it brings immediate pizzazz to all of these looks. It frames your face beautifully and shows off those gorgeous waves. I'm drawn especially to outfits 3 & 4. I was surprised to read that the silky black pants are a little out of your comfort zone; they look fantastic as you styled them!

Must copy #3 and #4! Thanks for the inspiration Aida. And thank you also for your write-ups and photo collages which are always a treat to peruse.

You look fabulous in your new haircut, and I love your curls! Your outfits are a perfect complement for your new hairstyle. I especially like 1 & 3--those jackets really make the outfits pop!

Great outfits. I especially love #1 and #3 for some reason. And #3 is making me rethink my hesitation to embrace loafers ;-)

You new do is spectacular, Aida! Isn't it great to be able to change from the long hair to a shorter one? It is amazing how this affects the way you look i the same outfits. It does add more spunk to them I think.
I am in love with #1 - of course, it has stripes, orange and cobalt, how can I resist?!
#2 is a close second, love those slouchy cropped trousers and turquoise with red is a very lively color combo!

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

Very interesting about adding the black because of the (awesome BTW) haircut. I really like 2 and 4 best, but you used black and color with good balance in each outfit. .

Looking great! #1 is my fave - terrific colours and shapes :)

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

You are cuter than cute :)

Aida, I can't adequately express how much I love the shorter crop. It's like you were *meant* to have this length your whole life - like Suz when she chopped off her hair. As spunky as it looks, I also think that it has a retro ladylike feeling to it. You would not be out of place in a the 1920s. It works with the softer look that you are going for on this leg of your style journey.

I LOVE how you added blue to the orange/black/white combo in #1. I actually wore those colours yesterday!

Just loving it all! KILLER week with the very best new shorter do!!!

  • JR replied 11 years ago

I LOVE those cargo pants! Where did you find such glorious things?

  • Kari replied 11 years ago

Aida, the new haircut looks so amazing. I keep liking it even more as I see you style it differently! It's very interesting that the cut is pushing you to try more high contrast looks: brights with black and white, structured woven blazers with softer knits.
I also love seeing how flattering this cut is to the planes of your face. You are a knockout!

  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago

Your hair looks really great! I agree, you were meant for this length. Having curls myself I know how stressful it can be to go from a longer to a shorter style, but you've totally succeeded. The outfits are all fab, too! My favorite is #1 :)

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

Thank you SO much for all the great comments ladies, sorry to get back to this so late! (It's been one of _those_ months.) I didn't mean to imply that I don't like the new haircut, I really love it! It's just that I've actually worn my hair short quite a lot more than long, so going back to short hair isn't as big of a change FOR ME as it is for you gals who have only known me with very long hair :) I will say that I've since been wearing it a LOT more messy after this first week, it's a really perfect cut for super messy bed-head curls and is waaaay easier to style than the long hair was ^^

Deborah, good question! I'm not sure if there is such thing as too much scrunch, but I do tend to like (and get, since I'm short) a lot it myself; the gray jeans in #4 certainly have a LOT, probably more than any other jean I own. I wear both flats and heels with all of my skinnies, and those look just as scrunchy with heels :)

Angie, thank you ^^ Interesting that you feel like it's "my" cut, as several friends commented the same! One didn't even realize I'd had it cut for a few minutes because it looked so natural. I suppose there's a good reason I've worn my hair above-the-shoulder, usually in a bob of some sort, for most of my life :) And you know, it didn't even occur to me that it's got a retro quality at this length but certainly see it now that you mention it. The hairstyles were my favorite thing about the fashion of the 20s, so I'm happy to have a bit of that now!

JR, I got the silky cargo pants from a YLF swap earlier in the year so unfortunately I'm not quite sure where they're from (Anna? Do you remember?).

  • Lisa replied 11 years ago

First the new do, that is super cute on you! Great length here. I notice your neck and shoulders right away as someone else mentioned. Now the outfits, how funny that you add a bit of black almost everyday. I do notice the black touches tie in nicely to your new hair. That's an easy way to bookend.

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

Thanks, Lisa! I am happy to draw attention to my neck and shoulders, I love both of those areas on myself ^^ I'm definitely feeling like I need to actually add in darkness to bookend, when with the long hair it was enough of a statement not to need it. This has been my biggest surprise with the short hair!
