WIW 06.12 [sporty with big hair]

This is a straight up copycat of one of the example photos from Angie's recent Sporty-Luxe blog post, the last in the second row. Bomber jacket zipped up? Check. Rolled BF jeans? Check. Pointy ankle-strap pumps? Check. Clutch? Check. Easy peasy, done and done :) Added my 80s mirrored sunnies for more sporty fun. And further accessorized on the luxe side with a dainty gold bangle, candy pink lipstick, double-coated mascara, and I've also worn long earrings with the pomp-pony for the first time; while I quite like it here, I fully expect it to continue being a rare occurrence.

Three interesting details:

ONE: To give this jacket an even stronger shouldered look, I folded both halves of its shoulder pads (oh yes!) to the back instead of splitting them around my shoulder. Instant faux sharp shoulder look. What can I say, this IT enjoys a sharp shoulder!

TWO: I didn't like how the belt looked done up all normal like. I actually preferred the look without the belt but needed it to ensure the jacket would behave. So I swiveled it around and buckled it on my side to give it a more asymmetrical feel, as well as show more of the studs from the front.

THREE: To play up the sporty I had to put my hair up, of course, and the "pomp" part of my pomp-pony is extra big today (I don't have much control over it, heh). It really does photograph quite nicely. But the full height is the same distance as the tip of my nose up to my hair line! In person it's much more much than it looks in the photos; you can kind of get a sense of it from the middle photo. Too big? Not sure, but it is pretty fun.

Nail photo detail in Tuesday's post, and available items collected below. Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome!

Omigawd I love this! And your hair, your hair is awesome!

  • Lisa replied 9 years ago

How clever with the shoulder pads.  I really like how you have one color blocked item paired with another here, that's a fun twist to a look.  And big hair, what is not to love about big hair!

  • Missey replied 9 years ago

Aida!  You are all kinds of awesome, gorgeous fun in this outfit!  Reminds me of "Grease" in the best kind of way....retro with a modern twist.  LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

    Major love and total inspiration!

  • Gracie replied 9 years ago

Another fantastic outfit! Love, love, love the fit and wash of your jeans, they match your sunnies so well. And the pop of hot orange against all the cool neutrals is brilliant.

Thank you all!! I knew you gals would appreciate the extra poofy pomp <3 Felt very happy and perfectly me in this, sporty as it is. I blame the adorably refined footwear. High likelihood that I'll wear variations of this again.

Anna, I need a few extra boost buttons for you. I'm delighted :D Thanks for the confirmation on the big hair too, I'll try to be fully comfy wearing it that big in the future. Go big or go home!

    Fabulous - love your hair.

  • Neel replied 9 years ago

And you nailed it to perfection! You don't do any wrongs :)

Sheesh, what a great look on you! I love the whole outfit. Okay, I'm a little ignorant of hairstyles--I hadn't heard of pomp pony--but it's a fun style on you. Definitely goes with the outfit really nicely. The way you're wearing your bangs reminds me a greaser look, too, which goes with the rolled jeans and the jacket silhouette.

I love it too, the sharp shoulder is great! And I like the hair, I think it's fun. You look awesome!

I like the way the hairdo adds a fun and flirty 50s touch to your sporty luxe ensemble.  The repeated grey accents pull everything together, while the orange bag brings a surprising exclamation point to the entire look (I came up with that one just for you since I know you work in typography).  Overall super stylish and paparazzi worthy!

What a smile outfit...You really nailed this one...BF are TDF and the hair is perfect...

Wow,  Aida's looks always fab! GREAT BOMBER!:-)

Love the trick with the shoulder pads, did they stay put during the wear?

  • replied 9 years ago

Gorgeous! Love it. Taking notes... and I now could be seriously tempted to get a bomber. I love the pairing with slouchy jeans and refined shoes. BTW I have a belt with studs on and they are more at the sides. I will do a swivel next time I wear it!

  • Mona replied 9 years ago

A big yayyyy! from me for sharp shoulder line and big poofy hair. Love your dramatic style, Aida.
What a coincidence, i am also wearing the same jacket today with Bf jeans and black pumps. I don't look half as adorable as you do, though. I will post pics once i get home tonight.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the bomber worn as a pseudo top and how clever of you to make the shoulder line nice and sharp with a shoulder pads adjustment! The big hair is soooooo much fun :)

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

Ok - I am posting and running here - so haven't really read your write up - but your photos scream sporty luxe to perfection!!! Wow! Those shoes with it all!!! Fab!!! Well done. Happy Friday :)

Aida - you totally worked it here and to great results - Love it!

  • citygirldc replied 9 years ago

Such a cool outfit. SO FAB!!! I love the jacket with the shoulder pads and makes the jacket look streamlined.

  • MrsK replied 9 years ago

Aida, you totally inspire me! I don't think I'd describe my own style the way you describe yours, yet I find myself wanting every outfit you post, without fail. (Maybe I need to revisit my views about my own style...!)

    This is the best!!!

Fantastic! I love this - you look really, really great. I always love to read through your thought process on your outfits.

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

Oooh, I love the grey ankle straps with the grey/white bomber! Now that's cool.

  • merwoman replied 9 years ago

Playful to the max! Love what you did with the shoulder line - so creative!

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Ohhh thank you all so much for the lovely comments on the outfit (I'm super tickled this went over so well, seriously), and sweetness on the big hair! I had some trepidations about the hair initially but felt better as the day wore on, and now feel even better. I don't know that I could wear it this big on a regular basis, but at least now when I really feel like the extra drama I can be more comfortable sporting the Extra Big.

Firecracker, well I made up "pomp-pony" and you know I don't think I ever actually said what I meant by it. I mean it as "pompadour ponytail", in the family of the Rockabilly 'do. Great eye on what exact other elements played into the Greaser vibe -- I had the feeling that the hair was "right" but hadn't broken it down any further, so thank you for that!

Coco, hah! Yes I appreciate the type joke ^^

Lyn, surprisingly yes the shoulder pads stayed put perfectly throughout the day. Even with hoisting a computer backpack on/off a couple of times.

Mona, how fun! Looking forward to seeing your outfit.

MrsK, now that is interesting indeed. I had to go back to my profile to see what I had checked there, and also took a peek at what you had listed. We do have the "Urban" in common which I use as my overarching vibe guidance; and while I don't have much "Sporty Natural" normally, recently more sportiness has been coming through from my "Trendy" side so perhaps there's some overlap there as well. If you're inclined to post about it I'm always happy to chat style preferences!

Merwoman, I thank you again for noting the playful aspect a few days back -- it has really got my brain sorted!

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Aida, you look much cuter an d more fun than the JCrew model.

  • Sveta replied 9 years ago

I love it all to the last detail - and the hair, the hair!
Another one I would totally copy if only I had :-(

  • Patricia replied 9 years ago

I am very covetous of that jacket every time I see it and the pomp is so great.

  • Adelfa replied 9 years ago

I can't really add anything to the brilliant analysis here except to say you look completely amazing!

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

Oh I love what you've done to the shoulder line of the bomber! And you know I'm going to try it with mine :)

Another fab outfit, and I love those ankle strap pumps with your BF jeans.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Killer to the power of Killer

This one - with its '80s flair - launched me into orbit, Aida. Who made those jeans?

  • leopardluxe replied 9 years ago

Love, love , love this whole outfit and with the hair...amaze-balls!!!!

I especially love that you made  the slight tweaks you mention (w/the shoulder pads and belt)  in order to make it more "your own."

Too, too fabulous. This is one my absolute favorites of yours (and I love all your outfits!)

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Oh I just saw that there were more comments here, thank you all so much! What a nice surprise ^^

Angie, the jeans were a limited release of selvage denim from the GAP last year. They're just the standard 1969 original fit (straight leg, no stretch) in an ankle length, and I don't think intended to be worn as BF jeans but they fit all of my criteria :)
