WIW 05.15 [rusting in the dark]

Today is, sadly, the last in a short but glorious string of really warm days; tomorrow will be cooler, and next week quite a lot cooler. Hubby and I had thought we had tickets to a baseball game tonight, so I'd planned on a warm-weather-with-layers outfit... but we were a week off and they're actually for next Thursday! That, along with the fact that hubby doesn't like these shorts nor the pomp-pony AND Fridays are date night, prompted me to wear what I was going to wear tomorrow today (mouthful!). As a result, I'm doing something I almost NEVER do: wear the same shoes two days in a row. I like to give them a good rest between wears, but also wanted to wear this outfit since it's entirely likely that it'll be a good while before we see temps in the 80s again!

Wearing so much black is not something I've done often in spring/summer the past several years. In fact, I rarely even wear black footwear in spring/summer so this is all kinds of different! That said, I've been into the idea of pairing pastels with black for a slightly less graphic feel over black and white. The shorts aren't really pastel but they are muted, and my skin being pale also gives me a "pastel" to work with. I'm also into the idea of pairing black with my very faded denims, which isn't something I've done in a good while either. This particular color combo isn't much of a stretch when I think about it since orange+white is one of my favorites, and my hair is always going to add some black; I've just got different proportions of those colors here.

To ease into the black top thing, and to pick up on the white in the shoes, I did feel the need to add the big cream necklace which does double-duty as a bit of filler for this low cut mixed-media shirt. I chose my white clutch to keep it springy, copper pyramid studs to go with the rust, and while I tried my darker-framed retro sunnies initially I settled on this peachy pair because it felt appropriately lighter. Finished the look off with candy coral-pink lipstick because it was just so opposite everything else in the outfit.

And just for fun, more typical faces; I tend to have rather *ahem* animated expressions ^^

Available items collected below. Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome.

EDIT: Well wouldn't you know it, hubby invited me out for dinner so he has to deal with the shorts and hair anyway!

Those shorts look super cute and comfy. I like the way you lightened the outfit and bookended the white in your shoes with the necklace. Cute expressions in the second set of photos, too!

Oh, I adore this lighter rust, the *paper bag* shape, with the silky black and ankle straps. Really great.

Kind of an updated Rosie the Riveter - I like!

I think hubby will manage - you're gorgeous (especially with the faces)!

Your outfits never fail to impress me. I used to think shorts + heels is a faux pas but you have proven me wrong! I love how relaxed this outfit is but you polish it up with heels!

I love the drapey shorts but the shoes are the star of this outfit. Love them!

Hehe, I remember your animation. :) Well, even though your DH may not like it, you get plenty of appreciation here. I like wearing black when it's hot; it disguises all my sweat. o_0

You look great! Sunglasses bookend with the shorts, and shoes with the necklace. You are so great with the details. Well thought out. Enjoy dinner :)

So cute, Aida! I love this :) It's polished and slouchy all in one. So chic!

I find colors difficult in hot weather because I like dark colors. This is great inspiration, thank you!

I think when an outfit looks this fabulous, you are allowed to wear your shoes twice in a row ;)

Lovely outfit. Bet hubby thought you looked pretty cute. Opi do like the way you have worked with the black here, and I just love those shoes.

  • lyn67 replied 9 years ago

Love. Those. Shoes. And you are too cute, Aida, with the shorts and the goofy faces:-)).

The necklace, bag and your own skin add plenty of light into the mix. I love the paper bag waist. Sadly as a bit of an apple with a flat butt that waist style doesn't suit me :( I will just have to enjoy vicariously through you. Love the pomp pony and toning sunglasses to finish your look, YLF. Enjoy your date!

Is that like Rust Never Sleeps?

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

I really like this outfit Aida.  Your attention to details, and bookending, are perfect.  Yet it doesn't look at all "overdone", which means you've got it right!

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Aida, how do you find those shoes fit?

  • Sara L. replied 9 years ago

Ooh, great outfit!  I would copy this in a heartbeat.  Can I ask where you bought your shorts?

  • Peri replied 9 years ago

Now see, those are the shorts I'm looking for! Except I want black or dark grey. Where are they from? Anything recent?

Sometimes husbands don't know what they are talking about. You look great.  (My hubby doesn't get the tuck in / tuck out tops.

Way to celebrate the good weather. I think we're swapping and getting your high temperatures next week btw. At last. The temperatures I mean.

I was drawn to all the blackness as I see it rarely (ever?) on your top half in this amount. It’s different and it suits you great, but it took me some time to get used to it. I also like what stark black and muted rusty shade look like on you. Clever the play with whites in the necklace and shoes. I’d also like to see this black top with black-er shoes. These are gorgeous btw, I think Tanya posted them a while back and I’ve been daydreaming about them ever since :-)

    Perfect choice of lipstick!

Thank you for the lovely comments, ladies! :D Dinner was great, we sat outside and enjoyed the last of the heat. Hopefully we won't have to wait until July to see it again.

MsKatieKat, I love the look of shorts+heel, especially with dressy shorts, but I've found it just feels too bombshell for me so I generally wear mine with flats. I would pair long dress shorts with heels, though. The wedge on these little d'orsays is very small which will happily let me treat them visually as flats.

Rae, good point re black. White seems to work pretty well at that too, but unfortunately the items just don't have the longevity in true heat.

Ummlila,  oh! I hadn't thought of that, but I suppose it is. If anything I was thinking more Billy Talent, but happily it wasn't raining yesterday :)

Elizabeth P, the shoes run a little large. I kept the smaller of my two usual shoe sizes (7.5 and 8), the toe box is plenty ample. I could probably have even fit a further half size down (I didn't try the 7) but decided to keep this size to accommodate any heat-induced foot swelling as these are summer shoes for me.

Sara and Peri, unfortunately I have no link to share for the shorts as I got them a few years back from Nordstrom Rack. I'd love to get another pair myself! I do see this style pop up at Anthropologie, like these or these, but it's harder to find them with the longer inseam like these have. If I see anything I'll be sure to share.

Ornella, glad you get to enjoy some warmth finally! To be honest it also took me some time to get used to seeing that much black on my top half ;) If you can imagine this black top with black pumps and those very faded long BFs I posted earlier that's what the "dark" version of that outfit was. The weather is cooling down now, so I will probably be wearing that dark+light BF outfit, or something very similar, this coming week.
