WIW 05.01 [bright rusted gold]

Today is the last of our mini spring heat wave (*sniff*), and while it's about as warm as it was yesterday (about 85F) there's definitely a cool breeze coming in.

These lightweight roomy shorts should be perfect for the PNW's mild summers, but because of the rusty color my brain just can't seem to wrap itself around the idea of wearing them outside of fall. I feel like the best way to get over that is to force myself to wear them, get my mind going on more summery ideas! So for today I went with the easiest way to inject some springiness: lightweight white layers + gold accents.

I immediately thought of this sleeveless top because I love how crisp white+blue+orange looks in summer. Of course today's orange is more rusty than the bright orange I'd normally wear, but I figured the white and blue would help crisp things up regardless of what orange I added. In addition it has a springy looking floral, bonus! If I were actually doing stuff outside I'd wear this sans cardi with a semi-tuck, but since I'm inside today I chose to fully tuck and definitely need the extra layer. I liked the soft look the top and shorts had, so I grabbed this white cardigan instead of my initial idea, my white blazer which is semi-cropped and cotton; I'm realizing that I would really like to get a longer soft white blazer to compliment this cardigan for days I still want soft but need more structure!

From there I decided to go full-on matchy with the gold accents (shoes, purse, and jewelry), though all of the golds are different (cracked leather, sequins, and brass metal respectively). I also suprised myself by not wearing my rose-gold watch for the first time in, like, 1.5 years. It's been a no-brainer daily jewelry piece since I got it, but for some reason today I took a peek at my other watches and just had to pull out my white watch to wear. The metal watch would work just fine here, but something about the white leather feels better. To finish the look off I went a little heavier on the mascara and layered two sheer bright orange lipsticks to get a soft neon orange shade.

I'm happy to report that these shorts are feeling sufficiently warm-weathery today! Now to get working on some other ideas for them, although the weather to wear those ideas probably won't resurface for a good while ;)

Aida, I love your pairing of rust with the blue floral and these fluid shorts are perfect for springtime.  You clever, stylish creature to add the gold (sequin) touches.  Yes, I'd say you're ready for these warmer days.  Love it.

Those shorts are the perfect colour for doing 'pastels with earth tones.' I have been looking for that colour everywhere. It is a HEC (highly elusive colour)... hehe.

Wow, you can pull off shorts like no one's business!!

I love any shade of orange/rust with blue and white. The shoes are a lovely metallic "nude" It was warm here today, but I had to work so no shorts just yet (and I don't have your legs for them anyway)

    Thank you ladies!

Rachy, yes this shade is incredibly hard to find! It's one of the few dusty/muted colors I can wear and totally agree with you that it's fabulous with pastels. Which I have never tried because, well, my pastels were all for s/s and I'd only been wearing these in fall! I now have way more ideas to try, thanks ^^

Lyn, I'm on team pants in all their lengths :D Thanks for the shorts compliment, I am waaaay happier in shorts than skirts!

Ooh, I like the shorts.  And a lovely outfit.  What brand are the shorts?

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Thanks Marmee! The shorts are Willow & Clay bought at the Rack a couple years back. They're loose and slouchy (like 3" dropped crotch); this style of shorts is one of the few that I like at mid-thigh lengths on me. I'd love to get another pair if I could find one!

I love those shorts combined with the blue floral top and gold shoes. You are an expert at color combinations!

Today was an excellent day for this outfit, and you look adorable, Aida. The blue really punches up the rust. Well done.

So pretty! The whole look kind of reminds me of a vintage vacation snapshot.

That is how to wear shorts!

What a great color combination and gorgeous outfit. I would never have been able to put something like this together. Am going to have to take notes on this one!

I love the way he shorts ground the china like pattern of the shirt. And gold sequins?! I want to bust out my sequin skirt now!

Fantastic! You are such an inspiration Aida. I love your way of analysing and planning your outfits. You have a real knack for it.

Thanks for all the lovely comments! I appreciate the feedback.

Aubergine, yes it rather does! That is a poetic way to describe this color palette, I really like it.

Una, hah I call this my china print tank ^^

Diane, thank you! Some of it happens consciously and some of it I realize after I've made my selections. It used to be a bit of a puzzle to piece together, but I've got a very good handle on it now.
