WIW 04.20 & 27 [print mix and quick trench]

#1 - Last Sunday's outfit, worn for hubby's birthday dinner at his folks'. Full on crazy print mix, but then not too crazy because all of the prints are squares of sorts and the colors are repeated. I don't usually wear flats with these pants but casual was on order. Slightly nerdy proportions, and a bit baggy overall.

#2 - Today I spent most of the day gardening, but needed a quick run to the garden center for cat-safe flowers (he just insists on eating everything). I didn't want to fully change so I just popped over my cream trench and a red hat, swiped on some lip gloss, then swapped gardening shoes with a pair of low heels. The white clutch was still loaded from yesterday, but I ended up putting my wallet in my pocket and leaving the purse in the car so I'd have both hands free for pretty flowers. Of course, shortly after planting was finished it poured. And then hailed. *sigh* This is pretty much my formula for any quick grocery or errand run when I'm too lazy to fully change and then change back again (I normally don't take photos of it, though!). Anyone else do this?

Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome.

What was with the hail in the Portland/Seattle area today?  I was attempting to garden too and the cats and I dashed for the house.  Hope your new plantings were okay.

Really like the gray sweater top, and the pants and shoes are very cute together.

Yes for quick errand runs a trench and nicer shoes cover a multitude of hidden work clothes, I agree.  That's a lovely coat on you, and seems like a practical way to wear a white topper as trench material is usually fairly dirt resistant.

Adorable! Love the hip to be squares look! And the throw over trench is a given for me (though mine is not a trench) with a beanie to cure hair woes.

Crazy pattern mixing really works - keep up the daily posts I look forward to them.

Ooh nice pattern mix - the patterns are almost like textures. And how sneaky covering up the gardening outfit with a trench! :D

Lovely pattern mixed outfit!  And the trench, shoes and bag look so harmonious together.  It feels good to have the kind of wardrobe where you can throw on a few things and look and feel chic.

Love the pattern mix in 1st outfit. Overall baggy fit looks very trendy.

I love how a coat & hat can smarten things up! I'd do it more if I lived in a climate that allowed me to rock outerwear more than 3-4 months a year. ;)

I love pattern mixing, and #1 makes me smile - so much fun! And I live in a climate where we wear outerwear 9 months out of the year, so I do what you did all the time!

Great tweedy pants and the trench looks terrific on you.

Pattern mixing is divine, Aida! Love the outfit. You are very clever with the trench coat! I try to have all my stuff before I start because I'm too much of a pig pen to put anything on over my gardening clothes. If I forget something, then DH can go to the garden center!

Thank you all for the lovely comments! Thanks also for sharing your quick cover-up strategies with me ^^

Rabbit, yes exactly! The trench is machine-washable poly with a nice water repellant sheen so it's very easy to keep clean.

Kelly, oh trust me I make a mess too, I just hadn't really gotten going yet ;) I was laying out the plants I bought the day before and realized I needed a few more, plus had to swap a couple of the flowers with non-toxic-to-cats varieties.

You look great! Heels to the garden centre!? Wowee!! I'm a disaster in the garden....that's why I try to stay far far away ;)

  • Aida replied 5 years ago

Thanks Jackie! I used to feel a bit conspicuous clacking around in my heels at home improvement type stores, but they're more comfortable than flats to me so I'm totally over it now. Plus these are just little baby heels ;)

A super duper pattern mixed outfit in #1. Very 2014. xo

    And effective garden-to-grocery-shop formula too.

Aida I like to catch all your posts and have caught up with three prior to this one.I really loved the red, white and lime green and its sequel with lime accessories. Your casual weekend outfit reminded me to wear my cream pumps with jeans now while the weather cooperates. This post is a treat, with its soft pattern clashing.

Wow! Love the birthday dinner outfit. Your shopping outfit is fab too. Everything fits you so well.

Love this Aida. As crazy as all the patterns are together, the 'tones' give the whole outfit cohesion - beautifully done.

Thank you very much ladies, happy to hear the print mix love.

Angie, are we seeing less of the really hectic print mixing that we saw a year or two ago? Feels like it, though I still enjoy a good crazy mix now and again.

Latana, aw thanks! I was very happy with the red/white/lime outfit, though I don't think it got much traction here ;) Yes definitely wear those cream pumps with jeans while you can!
