WIW 03.10-13

End of week and weekend outfits from this past week. Decided to start transitioning into lighter pieces for spring, not that it's currently anything like spring up here in the greater Seattle area ;) I'm also back to working on improving makeup after a short break.

  1. Worn to work. Was inspired to wear this after Una's discussion about PPL for skinny/ankle length jeans. Shamelessly copied from Elaine Hearn.
  2. Worn to work, then out for date night. Tried pairing this dress with black since I'd only done brown before. Also a successful attempt at this hairdo (finally!).
  3. Worn out with my husband to run errands and eat food. Trying a new pink lip tint which (apparently) is shimmery; I usually avoid these because they look too icy on me, not sure about this one.
  4. Worn out for drinks with friends. Trying a new semi-nude lip tint; again shimmery, like yesterday's, which kind of ruins the nude-ness for me. Still a pretty color though.

Comments, critiques, thoughts and questions welcome!

Love the striped sweater look in #4.

  • modgrl replied 13 years ago

Oh that look in 4 is fantastic for you, I love 3. so casual and classy. I don't love the light colored tights in look 2... I just don't think light colored tights are very flattering.

I love them all, and I literally loved each one more than the last! By the time I got to #4, I was flopping around and gasping for air!

Love #2 and 4. Would love to see Mary flopping around and gasping for air even more! LOL.

You always exude confidence in your photos; I love that! Love the red bag. I know it's a simple look, but I'm crazy for the casual sweater/jeans combo of #3.

  • cheryl replied 13 years ago

    Love all of them!

  • celia replied 13 years ago

Beautiful outfits all of them, it's hard to choose a favourite.
I'm no expert but would say that the lipstick on #3 is a bit too icy. Have you tried cremier lipsticks? And just a hint of color?(I'm not a great makeup follower but you have such nice strong coloring that nude and shimery just doens't seem to do you justice).

1 and 4 are my favorites today -- you look good in skinnies!

  • AJ replied 13 years ago

I think this is the first time I've seen you in flats (#1)! Elaine's outfits are always inspiring!

3 and 4 are my favorites of the week. I think I prefer the lip tint in 4.

Great outfits! I'd love to see something punchier with the white shirt - I think the necklace disappears a bit? Maybe a vest/scarf/big earrings/louder necklace/mans tie/long chain???? Thx for posting, and good to see more of your red bag!

Fab-u-lous! I'm flopping around on the floor with Mary! Each picture gets better and better and I loved the first one to start with! The simplicity of 1 is really striking. I wonder if I would be able to pull something like that off. That's the kind of outfit that I layer over because I feel like something is missing. Yours looks perfect. The plaid dress is lovely and totally works with the opaques (how do you do that?) The dolman in 3 is plain gorgeous on you (great shoulders, btw) and love the stripes in 4. The addition of the brown boots is perfect. I love that combo! Okay, and your hair in 2 is killer! I really like it down in 1 too. So pretty, Aida!

Let's hope it starts warming up soon here! I think it is still 5 degrees below normal, didn't we suffer enough last summer? I absolutely love #4!!

Thanks for all the lovely comments, ladies :D Glad everyone likes this group, I was very happy with all 4 of these looks.

Mary - You know how to make a gal smile! Thank you! (And thanks for the highly amusing mental imagery hehe)

Celia - Thanks for the input on the lipstick! The ones I've been trying are sheer colors since my lips naturally have a lot of color, but I think I'll be staying away from really shimmery ones from now on. With the sheer ones so far, deep red and orangey-coral seem to be the most flattering.

AJ - It's true, I rarely wear flats though I do wear them more when it's warmer :) Thanks also for the lipstick input, I think I prefer that one as well.

Kelly - You could do a look like #1 for sure, it's all about using pieces that fit perfectly. In #2 those are gray leggings; I think it helps to pair those opaques with casual looks, though I know they're not everyone's cup of tea. And thanks for the hair compliment, I'm trying harder to get my hair to look more polished/purposeful instead of like an unruly mop :D

I love #1 and #4. #3 outfit is extremely flattering but I'm not crazy about the pale peach color (that is strictly a personal thing).

Outfit #2 is cool especially the way the scarf and earrings complete the look. The only change I would make is to wear black, off black or charcoal micro fishnets or other subtly patterned tights, instead of the grey tights. The reason is that the light grey tights become the thing you look at first since the eye is drawn to light colors. When I want to look at the dress first. Does that make any sense?

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Thanks for the comments, Denise! The top in #3 is more of a tan/champagne with little sparkly threads (see below), but it definitely comes across as a fairly nude color which I know people either really like or really dislike :)

For #2, do you think the leggings are lighter enough than the dress to break the continuity there? To me, the legging extends from the dress and breaks on the darkness of the boot, whereas with dark tights it would extend from the boot and break on the lightness of the dress hem; similar but not exactly the same effect. When I look, the first place my eye goes is belt, followed by boot. But I know not everyone sees what I see.

  • CocoLion replied 13 years ago

Color looks more grey in your above photo. Color in photography is quite puzzling isn't it! I like the pale grey a lot more than the flesh tone.

I see your point about the break of color.

I think this is also an age issue. To me, the light color tights as worn are a younger trendier look. The darker stockings are for older gals like me! (Who still wants to wear mini skirts!) I hope I'm allowed to wear maxi skirts. I just posted a picture in my skirt thread. Are maxis too youthful or are they just something Angie dislikes? Derail derail...

  • catgirl replied 13 years ago

Aida, you have me searching for a red bag! I love all of these. But is your shirt in 3 some version of soul-sucking beige? I can't tell on my monitor. Your soul looks intact.

ETA: Oops, just saw your reply to Cocolion!

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

I've been trying to get the colors in my photos correct, but sometimes that darn sun sneaks out from behind the clouds and messes it all up!

I agree with you that generally lighter hose is a younger, trendier look than darker hose (though I personally like and use both), but I would guess that you could wear a dark tunic, gray leggings, and black flats and look lovely; the trick would probably be to use more luxe materials so it has a more refined look.

I'm not too sure about the age and maxi question though! Angie definitely dislikes them, but I don't think it has much to do with age. If you wanted to wear them I think you'd have to be careful to style it in a way that doesn't look matronly but also isn't overly trendy nor costumey. I saw the skirt you posted, and I'm looking forward to what you come up with since I'm still learning about this trend myself :)

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Una it certainly is a variation of soul-sucking beige :) I included another shot of it a few posts up; it's in between those two colors. Not quite gray, some form of tan/beige/champagne.

EDIT: For what it's worth, I do not have the visceral aversion to soul-sucking beige that many people do; I don't seek the color out because it is, in fact, tricky, but I am open to it if the shade is right. Which usually means it's more tan than beige.

EDIT EDIT: It also sparkles. So it's got texture AND shine which helps :)

  • CocoLion replied 13 years ago

I am glad Aida you are willing to be friends with beige. Gosh, beige just wants to blend in, it doesn't want to suck souls at all!

Men tend to like beige because for a second they think you're naked.

I will try to be nicer to beige!

    : D

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Denise your comment about men's preference is too funny! I had a good laugh here at work, I'm sure there was a raised eyebrow or two.

Finding the right shade is tricky, and I will backup all of Angie's advice: "textured, shiny or iridescent, or worn together with a high contrasting colour like black."
