WIW 02.06-10 MaryK's neutrals challenge!

It's been really fun seeing all the neutral outfits everyone came up with this week! Thanks for the challenge, Mary :D

For this challenge, I decided to wear only what I personally use as my true neutrals: black, charcoal, gray, white, cream, and denim blue. I also wear lots of other neutrals (brown, camel, olive, navy, etc.) but they are usually treated as "colors" in my outfits, while these here I use as "neutrals". I allowed myself 2 exceptions: my red purse because red is the only color I treat as a neutral, and my taupe boots because look how cute they are in that outfit :D As much as I love neutrals, I have to admit that it was tough to do this challenge this week because it's been especially gray and wet (except Tues!), but I really do like how all of these turned out.

I planned all five outfits in advance, and reordered them so both the neutrals and silhouettes were spread throughout the week. An interesting observation: Unlike my adjacent color challenge week, these outfits really didn't deviate from my initial plans at all; the only thing that got changed was the necklace in #4 was originally planned for #5 (I also planned these outfits more completely). I am guessing this has something to do with the fact that my classic/basic pieces in my true neutrals just aren't that fussy or tricky to style; after all, they ARE the items I use to ground my outfits.

  1. Monday, worn to work. Still digging on the flared-over-flares silhouette, so I thought I'd give it a try with this tunic which I've previously only worn with skinnies/leggings. After taking the photos I realized that the hems were caught under my sandals, so I took the back photo to show that I had PPL, I promise!
  2. Tuesday, worn to work and a quick stop by Nordstrom Rack. A neutrals version of Angie's awesome spring denim column formula, though this isn't a column since I used black denim on bottom. But the bright jacket (white) and patterned shoes (houndstooth) are there! I also tried buttoning my blouse all the way up for the first time inspired by Angie's post this day, and really liked how it looks in this outfit!
  3. Wednesday, worn to work. A slouchy pencil skirt outfit, and some neutral pattern mixing (houndstooth and leopard). I have realized that nearly every time I wear this cardigan I button it, which leads me to believe that I need to get myself a leopard blouse! I debated a long time about whether or not to belt this, and in the end decided against it.
  4. Thursday, worn to work and a quick stop by Old Navy. I wanted to have at least one bold, graphic, black-and-white outfit for the week and this was it! Since the coloring is graphic, I went for a simple outfit; I feel this outfit is very "Aida's Style" :) My first time trying legwarmers, I think it worked well.
  5. Friday, worn to work and for whatever's planned for date night tonight. Debut outfit for the MM Flynn boots! In person they are MUCH more taupe, though (as seen here). It's not quite warm enough to forgo tights, so I thought what could be more fitting than to wear my nude microfishnets that Mary sent me :D This outfit reminds me that I very much need to get a cropped denim jacket (3-4" shorter than this one, ideally) for pairing with dresses. And, I'm wearing my YLF Secret Santa necklace from the stylish Kimlee!

Outfits are great.. I actually think I realized I might be an IT body type or rectangle with tendencies that way so I really appreciate your looks. Even more I adore your vignette pictures showing the outfit so many ways in one frame.

#2 and #5 are making me drool all over my keyboard...

Those fabulous boots have me drooling on the keyboard! So many beautiful and different neutral looks! You certainly aced this challenge. I can't pick a favorite, they are all wonderful.

#4 is all kinds of awesome. Now I want a white button down. #5 is good too.

  • Sveta replied 12 years ago

Your WIW are always a treat, Aida. If I have to pick a favorite that would be #4. I am dying to wear shorts with tights but neither my age nor my legs agree with me on this. Well, I am going to live vicariously through you!

Great line up! I love black and white, and your week was full of it. I like the buttoned up shirt on you. And the red bag is perfect for a pop of color.

You might like the American Eagle denim jacket. It's definitely cropped enough for you.

Aida, these are great! I especially love the dress over jeans in no. 1!

  • goldenpig replied 12 years ago

Wow, these are all so great it's hard to pick a favorite. I think #4 may be my favorite with the cool pearls and shorts combo, but they're all fabulous!

  • rae replied 12 years ago

I am quite captivated by the necklaces in 4 and 5! The large bib really adds some killer texture worn with the white blouse... wow!

  • christy replied 12 years ago

Oh wow, Aida....as always, you look great in all of these, but 4 & 5 are AMAZING!!!! Especially #4 - seriously, this is hit it out of the park amazing.

  • jenanded replied 12 years ago

Oh these are great! I love that every day is quite a different look but its all still "neutrals"...

  • diane replied 12 years ago

I agree with goldenpig and christyg - #4 is perfect!!! I love the shorts with the shirt and that necklace is sublime.

  • Kirti replied 12 years ago

    My favourites are #2, #4 and #5! I love the necklace in #4 too - it's gorgeous :)

  • sarah replied 12 years ago

GORGEOUS, Aida. I am going to try the last one with my striped AT dess once it's warm enough for no hose here. And I love how the shoes pull it all together in 2. And 3 is so elegant and chic. And 1 and 4 are so fun!

  • Beth Ann replied 12 years ago

Anyone ever notice that Aida always looks like she's going someplace really fun? Even in your "work" looks, there is the terrific sense of play. #2 and #4 are my favs. 2 is playful classic and its best and makes me week for spring (particularly the jacket). Love your use of the white shirt in an otherwise wonderfully trendy look in 4. The necklace makes a terrific focus point, too, drawing attention to your face.

I hope you really did have a lot of fun this week, Aida!

  • Queen Mum replied 12 years ago

love, love, love 2 and 5. I must acquire a denim shirt soon so I can shamelessly copy 2!

  • Ginny replied 12 years ago

WOW Aida great neutrals week!!! I like that you tried flare over flare I think these proportions work great since you highlighted your waist, cute!!
#3,4 & 5 love the animal print and textured tights, super great and Oh how I wish I could pull off the tights shorts and boots look!! this is a great combo!! and with the jacket and bib necklace, way cool!! love that dress too with fishnets!!! adding the denim jacket gives it edge!!

  • Laura (rhubarbgirl) replied 12 years ago

I had a really hard time trying to make interesting outfits from only neutrals, but you've managed it - a lot more contrast and pieces than would have occurred to me. Love the big plaid coat. As always your outfits are amazing.

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

Gorgeousness! I love 4 and 5, but they are all awesome. You can wear winter shorts and tights really, really well!

  • taylor replied 12 years ago

    Gorgeous Aida!

  • Jaime replied 12 years ago

All great but I especially love #4.

  • nancylee replied 12 years ago

Awesome, every one, Aida. And I always love your fun poses!

  • kellygirl replied 12 years ago

This is one of my faves, Aida. Your neutrals have so much zing. I've been studying them to see how you make these so fantabulous. I love that they are simple but so striking. It's killing me. I can't pick a fave but I'm really digging 3 and 4 but everyone of them is awesome.

  • Lisa replied 12 years ago

#1-Tunic over flares is a great idea! I've been wearing my shorter dresses and tunics with skinny jeans. I'm going to try this!

#2-How fun is a white blazer at this time of year. And I like the all the way buttoned top, neat!

#3-This outfit is purrfect belt free.

#4-This is a look I really favor and often wear myself: black blazer, statement necklace, white shirt, now just swap your shorts for a pair of light colored denim jeans and you have one of my go to outfits this season.

#5-Yay, dress twins! I have this dress, and have only worn it with black hose, boots and cardigan. I really like the idea to lighten the look with a denim blazer, and light hose and boots. I may have to copy this one, thanks!

  • Ornella replied 12 years ago

    Oh, I die over #4 and 5.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments, ladies! I'm glad you all enjoyed my neutrals :D

Claire, the taupe boots were an xmas gift from my husband that I was waffling about keeping due to their very cool-toned color. They're the Miz Mooz Flynn that Rita and Christy both have :)

Anna, thank you! I'm super happy to hear you liked #4, it was my favorite of the week.

Brenda, hmm good to know! I'll have to give it a try, I really like the wash on that one.

Beth Anne, thanks for the sweet comment ^^ I did have fun with my outfits this week, though mostly I just went to work. Fun outfits always help make work more fun :D

Kim, I'm surprised to hear you don't have a denim shirt, it seems like something you'd have! This one is chambray, but I really hope to get at least one proper denim shirt this spring.

Lisa, I think you'd rock the flare-over-flare silhouette! It would fit well with the boho side of your style. /highfive dress twin! I like the sound of your outfit with it. I was surprised at how easily the jacket fit over the sleeves, I must try a colorful cardigan with it!

They are all beautiful on you and I particularly love #2 (those shoes!!!) and number 5 (the boots and denim with the dress) so pretty!
