WIW 01.19 (my Mom's 70s style)

My mom has always had wonderful style and fashion sense. A couple weeks ago I went through a bunch of photos of my parents from the 70s with my mom; my folks were a bit younger than I am now (29). The photos were a lot of fun to look through, and I scanned a handful for inspiration. Her style was definitely very Euro Chic, with a lot of natural colors and a bit of 60s mod influence. My mom rocked wide legs like no one's business, but I don't think I can wear them as well as she did.

On Wednesday, I wore an outfit inspired by her 70s style, and both my parents immediately commented on how much it looked like her without my telling them so I must have gotten it right :)

  1. My look, worn to work.
  2. My mom, not sure who the little one is. Unsure of exact year, '70-something though..
  3. My dad and mom, on an architectural trip to Turkey in '78 or '79. Love the chunky cable knit cardigan my dad is wearing, hehe!

Beautiful outfit Aida! I love the colors. I like how you took inspiration from your mom and made it modern!

  • bella replied 13 years ago

Wow, I love how you copied her hair style as well. Totally works!

Awwww you are so sweet! The photos are just lovely, and I think you have really done the 70's thing just right, and just modern enough for today.
    Awww.

I like that shade of blue....and those shoes look interesting. I like the colour from what I can see of them. I do like your style, casual yet pulled together well.

I think you rocked the 70's look, even the hairstyle looks great. You look so polished.
Your parents look so nice in their outfits also, I love to go trough my parents pictures from the 70's.

    Thanks everyone!

Kristine - I'm just getting into this navy+brown combo, it's an earthy combo that's not TOO earthy!

Bella - I think the bun really makes the outfit; when my mom's hair was long, this was one of the only ways she styled it! Very signature.

mumtojessandluke - Hehe, I think my mom said the same thing :)

Sally - The shoes are navy patent T-strap slingback heels with white piping and little cutouts on the top. I'll have to see if I can dig up a photo somewhere, or snap a pic this weekend.

Anna - Thanks! I picked it up from JCPennys, it's this one here. I have the red/black one too.

Celia - It was certainly a lot of fun to see them, though I wish more of the photos were in color. I'll probably go through them again as spring nears :)

Very cute! Loved seeing pictures of Mum - is the groovy bloke, Dad?

Killer pendant. I might steal that.

You look so good in blues, Aida. Love how you go for old pictures for inspiration. Maybe it is time for me to get out those old albums too?

Fun post, Aida! I can definitely see the resemblance! You captured the look so well. I love the simplicity of your work outfit and the pendant is perfect. You really know how to put together an outfit! Gorgeous scarf!

  • Kappy replied 13 years ago

That coat looks great on you. And I love your scarf!

  • Aida replied 13 years ago

Thanks everyone for the kind words, especially compliments for my mom!

Glad everyone likes the scarf. It's from JCPenny, and actually decently crafted for the price. I have the teal/brown and the red/black. Here's a link to it:

Angie - The groovy bloke is indeed my dad. He wore a lot of polo/button up shirts with cable cardigans, and bell bottomed slacks with boots. Also a snazzy thick mustache with a thin vertical stripe at the center shaved out :)

Sveta - I think you should get the old albums out, it's fun seeing family photos from the era your trying to emulate (especially since I wasn't alive in the 70s). Makes the inspiration much more personal.

Angie can't steal that pendant because I'm stealing it first. You look fab in this, simple yet stunning. The pictures are so sweet of mom, thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed this post--what great photos! That coat really suits you very well. My mom had a really great 60s/70s style too, but I don't think I could even try to copy it. I don't have the same eye or figure.
