AT slouchy pants take 2: petite vs regular?

Thanks to Una I was able to try a pair of the AT slouchy trousers in my size but petite instead of regular. To my (big) surprise I'm liking the petite fit better!

The regular pair would certainly need to be hemmed before I could wear them out, but after looking at the petite I'm wondering if the regular pair is too baggy (both pairs are baggy/slouchy; the regular is just baggiER/slouchiER.). As I said in my other thread I will be back to my normal size in the next month or two, which will put me about 0.5-0.75 pant sizes smaller.

The tan pair in #1/3 is the regular, the orange pair in #2/4 is the petite. Ignoring color and keeping my upcoming shrinkage in mind, which fit do you ladies prefer? Angie I hope you can weigh in on this, too. Again, I'm thick skinned :) Thanks!

Okay, they are both fab, but are the orange ones shorter in the rise? I prefer the slighly slouchier rise of the light ones, actually. But I also prefer the color and length of the orange.

And thank YOU for being my go-to gal on these!

  • kellygirl replied 12 years ago

I love the overall fit of the petite and that orange is outta this world too. My only concern is whether they are long enough. I'm not slouchy pant savvy so take my opinion for what it's worth (perhaps nada.)

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Una, yes the orange are shorter in the rise because they're petites (this is usually my problem with petite pants). They're also sitting up a bit higher because the waistband is a little bit smaller than the regular, but again that'll be sliding down a bit by the end of the month. Can't wait for you to get them :D

Kelly, yeah that's my concern too. I think they'll be a teensy bit longer when my weight goes back to normal because the waist will be lower, but I don't know if it'll be enough. The orange is fun right? It's so bright that you can see it reflecting all over the white walls surrounding me in the photos :)

I think I like the reg better, but I"m no expert.

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

I prefer the regular. The petite is tighter around the thigh, which is not quite *the look*.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Angie, even if I will be shrinking down in size from a 4 (here) to a 2.5-3 soon? That's my main concern. These pants are a bit expensive for me so I would rather that they fit my normal size.

  • gradfashionista replied 12 years ago

i'm a fan of the regular ones--they seem to fall more nicely than the red and the pleats are more visible.

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

I think so, Aida. These trousers are forgiving when they are baggy - even when you shrink. They just look better baggy to my eye. FWIW :). Feel free to go with your gut.

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

I prefer the fit of the beige ones (much prefer the orange color), but I'm not sure about the whole shrinking thing (you getting smaller). How long can you hold on to the pants in two sizes, to see if you will shrink too much to wear the beige size?

  • cciele replied 12 years ago

Love the color of the orange. But I'm with Angie on the fit -- even though the orange one fits you tighter around the rear and legs (and very nice fit it is), I think the look is supposed to be more slouchy, like the beige ones. Even with size shrinkage, I think the beige ones would work better.

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

Angie articulated what I was trying to say. I think a little more flowiness is the key here - see Nakidra's posts with the same pants for an example. Gosh, I hope I got the right size now...

  • Jaime replied 12 years ago

Right now I definitely prefer the fit of the light ones and the color of the orange. I do understand your shrinking self concerns, but it is hard to say until you shrink!

  • replied 12 years ago

Love the fit of the light ones on you! (except a tad too long)

I so want these trousers, I almost ordered them online and they were on sale for around $80.00 but I didn't know what size to get and they only had petite in smaller sizes anyway. Now the sale is over, they only have orange and I to wondered about petite being too short (even though I am 5'2" petite pants are so often too short). I am hoping against all odds to find some in a couple of weeks when we go shopping in the valley.

In the end it doesn't matter much, they would have no place to go and so just sit in my closet.

  • HelenInCanada replied 12 years ago

The regular fit looks best, IMHO. Love both colours, though! I need a pair cut like these - I'd wear them everywhere!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Regular version is the CLEAR winner here :) Thank you all so much! I wouldn't be able to get the orange in regular unfortunately, just in the petite size.

Angie, ok thanks! I am still a bit unsure since I don't wear pants this baggy (even my baggy flares aren't this big) but I trust your eye! How about the length? Should they be as short as the petites or a little longer? My initial hunch was 1" longer than the petite length.

Jonesy, looks like I have 60 days so I could hang onto the tan and see how they fit when I'm back to normal, but that would mean I can't wear them for 2 months (since they need hemming). It MIGHT be possible to hold onto the orange and see if they fit in 2 months, while also hemming the tan ones and keeping them as the Super Slouchy pair if they both end up fitting. We'll see how it works out!

EDIT: Una, if you ordered your normal petite size they should fit you!

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

I did. So the difference between these two is regular 4 and petite 4? I take it the 6P would be too big on you?

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Right, the tan is 4R and the orange is the 4P. I would have expected the 6P to be too large, but since the 4R seems to be the preferred fit it might not be. The post office wasn't helpful so I will be mailing them tomorrow; I could try the 6P and let you know if you want :)

EDIT: I don't wear petite pants, fwiw.

  • Carole replied 12 years ago

I have no clue about how they should fit and scrunch, but they look Fantastic on you. I think I slightly prefer the sloucher version. LOVE the orange!

  • replied 12 years ago

Interesting. Two of the SAs were wearing these pants at my local AT today. Their pants seem to fit closer to how the orange fit on you.

  • Scarlet replied 12 years ago

Definitely prefer the fit of the regular and I think the petite is too short. However, I am really concerned if you lose weight the regular will be just flat out too big. There is already a lot of room in the seat. What about sizing down on those?

  • Deborah replied 12 years ago

Aida what look are you going for? I ask because while there are differences in the fits both look good (very good).. If you are absolutely after an obvious slouchy fit then it has to be the regular, but if less slouchy and tailored is ok then the petite would be the way to go. I think it spends on what look you want to create.

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

I agree I like the slouch of the lighter pair more --- though, boy, was it hard to ignore the colour (so juicy and perfect on you!). However, FWIW, I think the length issue of the petites will be solved as you drop weight, in case you can afford both.

  • Lisa replied 12 years ago

I like the regular better. The petite look just a tad too short in the length and they dramatically taper. A bit too tight on the leg. The slightly looser fit of the regular looks like the style I see for these. I vote regular with some hemming.

  • morethanbeige replied 12 years ago

Aida, I also like the R fit better. They hang so beautifully and I bet they look great while in motion. The orange is such a wow color. Just gorgeous. It's so hard when your size is changing to figure out what works best. FWIW, both sizes look sensational on you.

  • replied 12 years ago

I actually like #3 for the length AND the fit. Having the scrunch at the bottom makes the whole slouchy vibe look that much more intentional (and 80's which I know you love). Even if you loose weight, they're not going to fall off you so I think you're good either way.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Thanks for all the great feedback, and ESPECIALLY for going into the reasons behind your preferences (that is a huge huge help to me). The regular fit is overwhelmingly the winner between the two!

Angie, how much would you suggest hemming the regular pair? I think there is 3" difference between these two lengths, 28" inseam for the petite and I think it was 31" for the regular. My initial hunch was 1" longer than the petite length at 29" but maybe that's too short?

Zapotee, interesting that the SAs were wearing the smaller size; that's kind of how I was expecting the correct fit to be as well but it's certainly not preferred here!

Scarlet, unfortunately the next size down in the regular isn't available online any more. That's my concern as well, there's already quite a lot of fabric at the seat and through the thighs!

Deborah, I did want more of the deliberate slouchy fit but I kind of also like the slimmer fit now too. They are definitely different, and I MIGHT be able to keep both but not sure yet. I kind of wish they were sized the opposite direction, though!

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

Try pinning 2 inches first. Let's see what that looks like.

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

I'm pretty sure the 4P will be too small for me but you'll know in a day or two!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Angie, thank you! I'll pin it tomorrow morning and see how it looks.

Una, as long as one of them fits you I'll be happy :D
